i feel like this story is particularly important right now, because protein-maxxing is *so* in vogue. before working on this, i believed i was woefully protein deficient

it turns out that's just a myth that has been floating around for decades—the average american gets more than enough protein!!

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

The widespread die-off of coral reefs represents the first climate "tipping point," according to the Global Tipping Points Report 2025. The report notes that our "new reality" is a series of tipping points with potentially catastrophic impacts.

Health care accountability framework bill would require provinces to report benchmarks for timely access to primary care, elective procedures, & emergency care, & allows the fed govt to reduce or withdraw cash transfers, if they fail to do so.👍

Tipping points are real but get garbled in reporting. This piece explained the nuance well.

"Every fraction of a degree in warming that humans prevent reduces the risk of runaway #climate conditions... #Tippingpoints highlight the stakes, but also underscore the [value of the choices we can make]."

Poland is safer for curlews and coots.

The hunting of 13 migratory bird species has been banned in Poland after years of pressure from conservation groups. The decision reflects improving awareness of wetlands’ ecological value across Eastern Europe.

We must get off this path as soon as we can.

We must directly confront this system of deeply inequitable and deadly fossil-fueled capitalism, which has become a planet-sized runaway diesel engine.

Nothing has changed since this article was written in 2023. /end

"The more fossil fuel we burn, the hotter the planet will get. This is basic, rock solid, incontrovertible, unassailable physics. It's a dead certainty."

Extreme heat, wildfires, floods, migration, food system collapse—it's all driven by increasing global heat. /1

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Do it for the animals.

Animal agriculture is a daily horror for gentle animals… on an incomprehensible scale.

It wastes resources and contributes massively to global heating.

Humans do not need to consume the tortured and slaughtered products of animal agriculture.

Factory farming isn’t necessary to feed the world. It actually reduces the food available to humans. We feed grain and soy to animals, but much of it is lost keeping their bodies warm or building body parts we don’t eat.
