Yeah position coaches usually handle this I think. But they’re all subbing a shitload. Can guess what’s happening there.
colintj.bsky.social
Don’t know but you could imagine it’s the kind of thing Sherrone is insisting on
colintj.bsky.social
They rotated a ton in ‘23 but they had quite possibly the deepest D since they went to 85 scholarships
colintj.bsky.social
Yet another inexplicable detail on that side of the ball.
rossrfulton.bsky.social
I’ve just never seen anything like that. The irony is that Wink is an NFL guy and NFL Ds hardly rotate. And there isn’t much need to in CFB anymore with the number of snaps so much lower. That is truly inane decision making.
colintj.bsky.social
Was totally wrong about this. They’re just doing shit like hockey subbing their whole DL in the middle of drives as part of an effort to make sure their worst players play a lot?
colintj.bsky.social
The starting DL was on the field for that one. So seems plausible there was some kind of 1H penalty for some guys.
colintj.bsky.social
They’ve been doing it all year and nobody has said anything about it inside the program that I know about.

Malpractice that Bowles would play in a huge game like this that early. Has busted a ton in limited snaps.
colintj.bsky.social
Pretty sure I’ve heard the name in pressers
colintj.bsky.social
Lionel Stokes is one at least that I know of. I dk the others. You’d think Wilkins would be helping BJM, right?
colintj.bsky.social
Like, this is a pretty remarkable disconnect, right? The LBs have not looked good under BJM and they were obviously better under every previous LB coach going back a long time now.
colintj.bsky.social
It’s crazy how bad they are at Tampa.

Kind of important to know how to run your primary pass down defense.
spacecoyote.bsky.social
He still emphasizes disguise way too much, gets stuck in odd way too much, pressures too much. There are DC specific issues.

They also run a metric shit ton of Tampa and run it like crap consistently. Problems are deeper than play calling and just DC
colintj.bsky.social
Also obviously he still blitzes way too gd much.
colintj.bsky.social
This is not a defense of Wink. To me this makes it much worse and goes to what we saw last year as well. Players with established baselines looking worse.

Have to wonder how practice is structured and what kind of attention they pay to reps.

It’s a Sherrone thing too. This was there last year.
colintj.bsky.social
Yeah if they get pure dropback or a zone run vs their QQH, it usually looks good. Gap run, screen, PAP, etc it looks gnarly.

And Wink has actually simplified the back end a lot, FZ, FZ Palms, and QQH is prob like 70-80% of their calls? But they have no idea how the front end fits w the back end.
spacecoyote.bsky.social
Yeah they have deeper coaching issues in that side of the ball unfortunately (not absolving Wink, but they aren’t even executing their most common calls well!)
colintj.bsky.social
Technically they’re blitz/popping not just pre-defined rats but w/e
colintj.bsky.social
Unsurprisingly Mattison’s Michigan playbook has similar. Wonder how long the Ryan tree has been running this stuff.
colintj.bsky.social
And here’s the 0 Double Rat (aka Train in the 2010 Jets playbook)
colintj.bsky.social
Conveniently Michigan ran these in back to back plays in ‘22 against PSU bc we were offside on the first 3rd down. Here’s the show 0 drop into Tampa.

I haven't had much time to jazz this up, but this is what I have for now. I'd like to go back and break it down by DC rather than HC.
colintj.bsky.social
Yeah if you’re stipulating that they would look like they’ve been coached by adults then I think you ofc take that
colintj.bsky.social
so you’re saying he’s already got the Franklin decision chart
colintj.bsky.social
I would tend to think better but I dk if they would actually understand their assignments.

Wink vs Minter
ianhussey.mmmdata.io
The original study used these questions, which did not actually ask about "desirability"!
colintj.bsky.social
a much slimmer resume than I would want but I’m not gonna tell you he can’t work.
colintj.bsky.social
Minter’s primary third down package was a 0 blitz with 2 rats and then Tampa off that.

He could coach that stuff. Wink can’t.

They don’t do the basics so ofc they can’t do the advance stuff.
colintj.bsky.social
can we see this as a histogram instead of a scatter plot?
