Photos coming out of Western AK are devastating.

Hardest hit are indigenous villages off road system, many miles by air from supplies. Most built on river deltas w/ no high ground to which to escape.

Cuts to NASA/NOAA mean worse weather data. Cuts to EPA mean no grants for erosion control. Etc.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.
Homes flooded in Kipnuk Flooding seen with water up to the crash barriers of local roads Sheds and debris lie scattered in the storm A small blue house has been blown onto its roof

Also, just for the record, police ALWAYS threaten to quit when someone they don’t like (ie, someone who threatens anything but the most superficial of change), and they never do.

But it always gets taken at face value, not as the genuinely *political* statement it is.

CBS News would never put a thinly sourced 'story' by a rookie blogger like this on it's air. Until now. The Free Press isn't a journalism outlet, it's bloggers aren't reporters. This piece is more NYPost than Tiffany Network but I guess that's the goal.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.

This is true and important, and also, much like confederate monuments erected as backlash to Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement, Columbus Day is about crafting a specific cultural narrative, specifically in this case, a fascist aligned one commonwealthbeacon.org/arts-and-cul...

Reminds me, as an Italian-American, that a lot of people escaped Mussolini, but a lot supported him, even here. Some of the origins of our modern national obsession with Columbus are directly from Mussolini propagandists.

Every day at noon, no matter how busy, Johny Merida Aguilar left his construction job and hurried to his 5-year-old son's school to feed him. His son has brain cancer and generally only accepts food from his father.

Merida Aguilar was arrested by ICE in September and faces deportation to Bolivia.

Literally had the police union head run for city council here last couple cycle. They're currently politically prosecuting one of our city councilors for standing up to ICE. And our centrist electeds are terrified of them.

Right, it's one thing to be thoughtful about not plucking something out of nowhere just to dunk, partly because why give it that much attention. A reply though, feels very fair game.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

I've been thinking a lot about this since me and @blackjew.bsky.social's daughter was diagnosed with T1 diabetes recently. Because of research advancements, the gap in life expectancy has been shrinking. My Congressman knows research can't bring his daughter back, but knows it could help others.

For generations, the federal government funded research that leads to medical breakthroughs & even cures.

But Trump’s massive cuts at NIH and beyond will make our country sicker, poorer, and worse off.

Like many of you, this is personal for me.
