During these uncertain times, I’m very happy to see that my institution, @scripps.edu has an open tenure-track Assistant Professor position. Any field in Chemistry or Biology is welcome. I’d especially love to see fellow neuroscientists apply. Please repost!

Also, if your cobs aren't at least 4 feet long what are you even doing.

I think this is a misconception. If correlation was causation, everybody would always want to know which is cause and which is effect, and they'd expect you to figure this out. Instead, today, you can always say "Meh, correlation is not causation."

My job would be so much easier if correlation was causation😔

For no good reason, a reminder:
Cash receipts in excess of $10k received during the course of a business transaction (for example, as compensation for services rendered) need to be reported within 15 days via IRS form 8300.

Form 8300 and reporting cash payments of over $10,000 | Internal Revenue Service
Generally, if you're in a trade or business and receive more than $10,000 in cash in a single transaction or in related transactions, you must file Form 8300.

Every time I log into Commons I see this message. I have no idea what it means. I have 10 reviews due by October 15 and I have no idea whether I'm supposed to do them or not. The SRO has been completely quiet since the government shutdown.

Maybe I should write a series of posts about how to adjust the mineral composition and temperature of water to make the perfect coffee. And how to pick the right grinder for the style of coffee you're brewing.

In my experience with blogging, there are often long periods where nobody cares about my posts, and then suddenly a post goes viral and I get a massive inflow of new subscribers.

To everybody who just subscribed or started following: Most of my posts are boring. Sorry. I’m doing the best I can. 😉
Plot showing an inflow of approximately 50 new subscribers between October 7 and October 10.

"Biology is just physics and chemistry, and in principle we should be able to write down the equations of motion of any biological system and solve them numerically. In practice, however, any realistic biological system is way too large for this approach and we don’t have the required compute."

AI in biology: "I read about some new computational method...get excited because it’s exactly what I need...I try the method...Most of the time things don’t work...I have seen this play out so many times my default assumption is nothing is going to work" blog.genesmindsmachines.com/p/we-still-c...
We still can’t predict much of anything in biology
Biology is hard. Yes, even for AI.

As I tell my students, if you arrived at a simple answer in biology you have done one of two things: arrived at the wrong answer or asked the wrong question

In the mean time, a good proxy is how quickly it starts producing designs. If you've got to wait forever and nothing is happening you may have to switch the target. If you're getting results quickly you're probably good.

It's too early to make statements about which binding pockets work better or worse. We see there are differences but haven't quantified them in any way. We'll probably write this up as a paper eventually.

I'd say even with available training knowledge success is not guaranteed. See the wide spread in performance in supervised prediction of mutational effects.

Thats very true. I even posted a post on my X account about that. People thought that AI is there so we don’t need interpretation but they didn’t realized that AI is learnt from the available knowledge and not that something which is not present.

It's quite possible that some of the binders are binding and just not giving us a signal in our assays. We're aware of this possibility and thinking about ways to test it.

Disclaimer: This is a large-scale effort with multiple labs involved. My role is computational.

I think people have to be careful with target-date funds. Being 70% in cash and bonds by year 65 is a terrible idea if you think you'll live to your late 80s or early 90s. It's probably better to just buy SP500 or Total World Stock Index or similar.
