For the time-being, many of the political news stories I share will have comments closed. I want to continue to share the stories as a service and FYI to other news junkies here but don't want negative energy in my comments right now. Apologies and thanks for understanding.

Peace isn’t measured by agreements, esp when imposed from outside. They aren’t measured in the first days of fanfare after a plan is agreed to.

They're measured by the months & years after agreements, when the cameras are long gone. They're measured in peace dividends & everyday moments of dignity.

Just watched a clip of Poilievre talking about Charlie Kirk, who killed him, and why. And it was not very different from what Trump says: blaming the authoritarian, violent left. It's an ideologically warped distortion field. Pierre may be worried about the leadership review. Or he might believe it.

That's the real Doug. I think it's a bit more than usual bc he's feeling emboldened by the success of the whole Captain Canada/protector/tough on crime thing & has taken it way over the line w/out the insight to understand that he has.

(I think he might be in shaky territory w/making a threat too.)

It's a bad day for the flacks when the premier who's scripted up the ying-yang (in Ford lingo) goes off script.

"Ford’s office appeared caught off guard by the vigilante anecdote, which the premier shared after a 36-minute speech and a 24-minute fireside chat with Mulroney."

NEW: Premier Doug Ford says he threatened an alleged shoplifter at a Toronto @HomeDepotCanada store with a “beating” after apprehending him on July 19. Ford had eluded his @OPP_News security detail. He made the comments today in front of 1,000 people.

NEW: The Ford government says it will spend another $75 million buying commercials on United States television channels, looking to push back against tariffs.

It follows a $50 million campaign earlier this year that failed to have tariffs lifted. #OnPoli

Ontario launches new $75M anti-tariff campaign on U.S. television networks | Globalnews.ca
The new $75-million commercial campaign will roll out across the United States following a similar $50-million campaign, which appeared to yield few results.

Isaac, it makes no sense. And to increase spend?

Either they're getting conned by their AOR or we're not getting the whole story about what's behind this ad campaign. What's the objective? Zero accountability with a lot of taxpayer 💲. What's the objective? Talk to some ad ppl on background.
christyceeck.bsky.social
Unless Ford can lay out a case with analytics for how past ads moved the needle on the target's attitudes and **actions**, this is like lighting $75 million on fire at this point.

As a comms person who was embedded in a best-in-class marketing/advertising dept, I'm not seeing how this makes sense.

I maintain that these US ad campaigns are as much for a domestic audience of voters as they are for US political leaders.

This is very much also about burnishing Doug Ford's vote-getting Captain Canada brand.

I have a very serious love for stories about people who take a radical direction change in their work. And this is a terrific interview, too. That's why this is a #GiftLink 🎁

I think a target of this Captain Canada brand buffing ad spend is Ontarians too.

This is my neighbor headed home after our morning walk. Not a fan of making waves. Hasn't attended any protests, yet. This morning he said about Saturday, "I probably should go to this one".

This Saturday, bring a friend to No Kings. Bring your neighbor. Numbers matter. Our voices matter.

Antibiotic resistance is not a future threat it’s here. It’s expanding faster than our drug pipeline, and it’s eroding one of the foundations of modern medicine’. Without stronger surveillance, stewardship, and innovation, even routine infections could again become deadly.

I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

"I don’t know about you but I’d be happy never to read another story or see another TV segment exploring the deeper feelings of Trump followers.

These are easy to find, and have been for many years..."
Robert Reich, the former Labor Secretary, whom I admire, has written about a nation that’s been traumatized by Trump’s anti-democratic fervor. He wrote recently about the deep anxiety, even depression, that so many feel, and argued that it is “a rational response to a nation that’s becoming ever more disordered.”

“Many of us now feel powerless and afraid. We don’t recognize our nation. We’re disoriented, vulnerable, anxious.”

If millions of Americans are feeling that — and I agree that they are — shouldn’t it get some news coverage? If that feeling is driving them out to protest next Saturday, that seems like a pretty good story, too.

But instead, we still are encouraged to plumb the depths of Trump voters’ brains. Their feelings. Over and over again.

The Regime's goal is to grind everyone down. Plain & simple. Our goal is to refuse this by taking turns to fight where and how we can. When one group needs to bow out, then another group needs to step in and so on. We don't all have to do everything. We can all do something though. Stay in the fight

"Although no specific SDF recipients were named by auditor general Shelley Spence in her scathing report on the Skills Development Fund released earlier this month, the Justice Fund appears to match an unnamed example she gave of a project that went badly..."

In the example matching the Justice Fund’s circumstances, civil servants scored the project’s application “low” at 47 per cent because it had been active for only three years with no governing board; had no experience managing public monies and the accompanying data collection; it had limited experience delivering employment programming, and it presented an inflated budget with no quotes provided for capital expenditures, the report said.

ICE is recruiting quickly. And given its glorification of violence & aggression on its socials, it's going to attract a lot of dark tetrad personalities.

@brianklaas.bsky.social has looked at how recruitment of police officers determines who ends up in the uniform. His work feels very relevant.
