As I get older and deafer (who knows why), I depend on close captioning more and more, and I really appreciate being included so that I can enjoy the art. I know that's not the same as being blind, but it helps me understand!

The person can now imagine the scene and smile. They also feel included within the online community, which is important.

In my opinion, it's courteous to include a description of images that you post. If you think they have value for sighted people, it's likely that they have value for everyone.

Let's say there's a picture of a kitten peeking out of a bathtub. To a blind person, that post is a blank space. Text reader apps will provide no information about the content of that post.

If the ALT text even says "a black and white kitten peeking out of a bathtub", that's useful information.

I don't like the idea that Bluesky would sell that info, but there's not really another way for folks who can't see good to understand what's in an image.

If your account is primarily dedicated to sharing images, use alt text. Yeah, you should use it no matter what, but making your whole feed unintelligible to blind people is pretty shitty. Unfollowed.
