We had an amazing @official-smbe.bsky.social satellite meeting in Puerto Varas. Great science, colleagues & Patagonian experience. Thanks the organizers @pablo-villa.bsky.social et al & SMBE for putting this together!

As a Montrealer, this makes me so proud! 🙌
“Though other cities offer bike-sharing programs, “Montreal revolutionized the trend,” TIME wrote, calling Bixi’s technology “the backbone” of bike-sharing services in cities including London and New York.”

Bixi bike-sharing program among the top 25 inventions in 25 years, TIME Magazine declares
The list also includes the iPhone and the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest particle accelerator.

Hard to stay focused on the talks with this beautiful background!

The meeting has started and the venue and science are just perfect! Happy to see old colleagues and meeting new ones!

PS: we were not on the same bike :)

I would have needed that this morning while biking and being nearly hit by a Tesla whose driver was eating a croissant rather than holding the wheel!

photo of a white car driving on a road. obscuring the car is a service pole with a sign on it that says: "BE SEEN - GRAB A BRICK! 1. GRAB 2. LOOK 3. WAVE 4. CROSS" the sign has an illustration of a person holding a brick and standing in a confident pose. beneath the sign, there is a yellow basket full of bricks mounted on the service pole

Will Sidney Crosby come back with the Habs to Montreal? #please

People are shortsighted. All the physical infrastructures would be cheaper and a better investment if we had invented and created them. Same for everything else we are going to spend money on in the next decade.

Massive investment in science in the upcoming Canadian budget would send a strong message that rationality and reason should lead the world, not charlatanism. People will return to science-based policies and health measures, and countries that have not given up will have a strong economic lead!

“Antiscience has gone beyond U.S. borders to Europe, Australia, and Africa. Defeating it will require unprecedented commitment and international cooperation, not only between scientific organizations, but also their host governments.”

Adaptation is less accessible through mutations in promoters than in coding sequences when large effect sizes are needed https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.09.09.675213v1

This is something we are working on!

Yep. Adaptation to antifungal drug treatment. It would probably be the same in the other direction, though. Flux through enzymes can change several-fold by coding mutations, rarely so with minor changes in protein abundance.

How can this be achieved? By surgery? :)

The richest country in the world turning its back on knowledge and rationality. Now, the richest province in Canada looking in that direction too.

Issues with a plasmid. The coding sequence optimized for one species works fine but not the one optimized for another (no expression here, just construction in E. coli). The company also had trouble synthesizing this particular one.

This is what I meant. I think we agree. Biochemistry does not care how alleles are transmitted.
