wilderness survival
be prepared to freeze scout
master says or you might not survive

beyond us mist crawls along the skin
of a pond he says to breathe it in

big breaths like a man and taste
the fresh cuts it leaves along the inside

of your throat let your body quiver
as your blood bleaches the fine air red

i stand frozen beside the master my throat
yoked tight within his grasp a firm man’s hand

i feel his fingers crawl inside my mouth
and slouch down through the blood

he fingers the folds and they peel back
leading him deeper and deeper down

i do not know who dragged us under
the water i cannot tell my flesh from his own

i try to scream but men only
jump to save little girls from drowning

looking up at the pond i wonder if water
freezes beneath the surface or just on top

Exactly! We compile the "text" out of so many unstable sources.

I remember finding out about pan-and-scan as a little kid, and being aghast that something was missing. How watching something first in pan-and-scan meant I experienced a different movie from others.
cherrypoppunk.bsky.social
Regardless of whether this is a good and/or ethical business practice, there's really interesting scholarship to be done regarding how these different physical versions impact people's reception of the text.

Props to Benjamin for sharing the details of his contract. Unfortunately no props to MRM because there's a lot of extremely outre stuff in here that I'd refuse to sign. Let's run it down. (Context: If you're negotiating a contract with Strange Horizons, I'm the person you're negotiating with.)

New neuroscience short story forthcoming in @analogsf.bsky.social! Which also means a story of - ultimately successful - negotiations with their new publisher.

Includes full final text of my contract for all to use while they finish rewriting their boilerplate.

My partner asked one of her online friends what they think I look like, based solely on how she has talked about me over the past several years...and this is the image they sent 🙃

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Natalie Portman with a shaved head in the film V for Vendetta, which is a movie not real life, gazes at the masked anarchist revolutionary V, who again, is not real life but based on a comic book character.

Haven't seen this shared a lot - but yes, 26 out of 30 of the scholars on the NEH Council just got axed - and surprise, what do you know about the 4 left? ⬇️
janaykingsberry.bsky.social
The National Council for the NEH had 26 scholars and leaders serving humanities efforts across the U.S. After today’s White House firings, it’s down to just 4 Trump-appointed White men, one terminated member told me.

From me, @travismandrews.bsky.social and @kelseyables.bsky.social:

White House fires much of the National Council on the Humanities
The White House appeared to fire all but four members of the National Council on the Humanities, an advisory board to the head of the government’s grantmaking agency.
