One of our cats, when annoyed by the people in the family, deals with his emotions by melodramatically huffing & storming over to the nearest cardboard scratcher to spend the next thirty seconds absolutely shredding the hell out of it while making eye contact with the person who annoyed him.

By rebranding genocidal rhetoric and violent misogyny as “edgy jokes,” JD Vance provides a permission structure for extremism. And he’s signaling to the next generation of Republican leaders that this language is not a career-ender but an acceptable way to signal loyalty to the MAGA base.
Vance on public outrage over the "I love Hitler" group chat: "Grow up! Focus on the real issues. Don't focus on what kids say in group chats... The reality is that kids do stupid things, especially young boys — they tell edgy, offensive jokes. That's what kids do."

My wife once googled a nail polish called Cornea Killer, and the ai overview assured her that painting your eyeballs will not destroy them.
Some parents talk about needing "help" raising their kids, & as a parent myself, I get that. Options to make things easier for parenting are great. With that said, there are also a lot of parents out there who don't want help, they don't want to do any of the work as a parent, they foist it off.
I guess one positive way to look at it is that anyone who looks at the details will see how wrong he was and recognize that it was either intentional lies or that he has reading comprehension issues. Either way, it makes his credibility go to shit.

This is why ridicule is an effective form of protest. Convening an Emergency Naked Bike Ride is ridiculous in the first place; having it give Mike Johnson such vapors that he calls it “the most threatening thing I’ve seen yet” is so over the top it’s ridiculous. Just perfection

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

Per Reddit, it looks like ICE may be masquerading as Mormon missionaries to get people to open their doors. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the LDS church needs to end their door to door proselytizing, especially right now. Real missionaries are going to get hurt. People are terrified.

You'd think people would remember the Iran hostage crisis and all the backroom sneaky deals the Republican party pulled in order to screw over Carter and make him look weak when he was up for re-election. Yes, it was 45 years ago, that isn't ancient history.
I'm surprised the dog wasn't right there, flipping out.
I had forgotten that was him. I did remember that he was an over-the-top Evangelical Southern Baptist, who inflicted that whole bs "purity culture" (including the purity balls) on his daughters.
Exactly. "I don't particularly want to see naked people" is fine. Being this extra about it just makes him look like he has severe priority problems or hangups.
Ugh, I'm glad you didn't get sucked into that mess. Nobody needs to be a part of one of those scams.
Yes, particularly when they're young. If you get a singleton, often the cat/kitten will get bored & destructive. Having a friend to hang out with cuts back on that. A lot of shelters won't adopt out single cats, they will try to adopt them out in bonded/friend/sibling pairs for a reason.
Reminds me of Mormon Utah cultural attitudes. The constant use of substitute words for swearing just ends up making people sound ridiculous. "Fetch" was hilarious, especially when "Mean Girls" came out using it in a different way. "Stop trying to make fetch happen," sums it up. Just use the fbomb.
Reminder: using scissors or a hole punch on flower petals or leaves will give you confetti that won't contribute to littering. Yes, it will take a little bit of extra work, but it's also appropriate for people to not make a mess of public spaces.

My kid has made it clear since she was in single digits that she does not want to be a parent. Other relatives respond to that thinking "OMG, that's so traumatic for you guys, that's so sad you won't be grandparents", & it's hard not to be really snarky about it in response.
And frankly? More often than not it seems like the people who are perfectly happy with the American health care system are people who do have insurance coverage & the finances to afford care. Let's not mince words, it's just another example of people pulling a "I got mine, fuck everyone else".
People like this never seem to realize that what they're suggesting is that lives should be valued differently, based on arbitrary things like personal finances & citizenship. Everyone has to weigh that out, but personally, I think it's horrific that this is even an issue, it doesn't have to be.
I'm pretty sure that commercial was so popular because it was a universal or near-universal thing. Don't have a quarter? All good!
Younger people don't seem to understand that repeatedly having to dial certain numbers, especially those that you dialed regularly, ingrained them into your brain.

I'd like to have some of my brain storage space, but it's full up of things like this.
My parents have had the same landline for fifty years now. My aunt (in her 80s) lives in my deceased grandparents' house, has the same landline number. My teenage best friends' parents haven't changed their numbers either. I'm pretty sure most of us still have memorized numbers we can't forget.

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.
