I am woefully behind on Halloween cards & October blog posts. BUT if you want something cozy & gently spooky to read, one of my favorite stories I've ever written is available for free on my website. AuDHD, ASD characters, supportive families, acespec romance. CREATURES.

Free estory: All The Creatures Were Stirring
When the Halloween Knight goes missing, misfit hearth witch, Merry Claus (yes, that Claus) must team up with their mercurial steed to find Hallow and save Halloween. Creatures is a cozy, whimsical …

I'm constantly astonished by how oblivious these (and other) accounts are. Should we have ever reached the heights of over-consumption driven by the Shein/ Target/Homegoods/Marshalls girlies/moms? Absolutely not. But maybe we don't shame financially insecure folks for replacing things they need.
Perfect for the season.
The stone was dead and we all knew it, but knowing wasn't the same as accepting.
A postcard, front and back.

The front is a photo of Saint Patrick's Grave in Ireland. A giant stone slab rests on a bed of cobblestone in the middle of a large graveyard. A town is just in the distance, past a few winter-bare trees.

The back reads: The stone was dead and we all knew it, but knowing isn't the same as accepting. Georgette believed the stone could be brought back to life, but Antoni told her not to be silly, because the rock wasn't dead. Stoney, aware of the irony inherent in his name, didn't want to get involved, but he was the only one of us with a car, so joke's on him. That's what Antoni said, trying to keep it all lighthearted, but his mom ran a morgue and his sense of humor was that of a drowning man. Still, Stoney drove us around to pick up supplies for the ritual Antoni swore would work. And it would, we all felt it. And we all feared it. I, for one, was glad the stone was dead. But the stone wasn't glad at all. Antoni set up everything on the stone, and Stoney, poor Stoney, handed him the knife.
I'm all for being mindful of consumption (especially performative over-consumption), but it sure seems like most "deinfluencers" are single/child-free/well-off white women who have the TIME and money to spend three hours staging the perfect video of them mending a twenty year old target throw.
@lauramcknight.bsky.social's wonderfully meditative story "Before Times Shells and Gifts" speaks of what it means to sift through ruins, our own and those we may never fully understand. It also provides gentle, commiserating humor for those of us who have been told "please do not lick the science!"
Despite the unimaginable death toll of deforestation and pollution, Kaye Boesme's powerful work still offers reconciliation in the end, not merely as grace extended but in inevitability. There is hope, however fragile, to be found in such certainty.

Adam's timely-as-ever poem "The World Ended in Ice" offers warning while encapsulating the frustrations of watching patterns of environmental destruction repeat across millenia. You can read it online today @reckoningmag.bsky.social

I told y'all had something exciting coming out today!

In Reckoning's first decade, we have been lucky to publish beautiful poetry, prose, and art by neurodivergent creators. I hope they (and everyone else) understand how important they are. Our world would be dimmer without these unique voices.
