“John David hadn’t initially perceived this man of jet-set casual fashion to be a preacher. He especially seemed out of place for Chicago, more 1980s throwback to hip Los Angeles or Miami than Midwestern Man of God. He wore no socks, just loafers that looked comfortable for a price.

John David kept Maggie close as Adonis walked. “It’s not often that I visit one of my own outreach centers. I’m admittedly a bit of a recluse, but with a bold presence. So I’m told.” Adonis smiled at that. He looked amused with himself. “Your name again?”

“John David.”

“We appreciate what you do, John. Every single church is a blessing to our cause.”

Gebill barely controlled the urge to correct the man’s pronunciation of ‘watch’, wishing to tell him, quite sternly, that there was no such thing as a ‘whurch’ and, even if there was, it would be a beautiful Brutish ‘whurch’ that didn’t appreciate being mispronounced by some Johnny Forriner! He didn’t, because his professionalism, while bent to breaking point under the current circumstances, was his bond. Later, in the pub, he would insult this man to within an inch of his life. Silently. To himself. Insulting visitors to the country was best done with seething impotence and a decent pint.

“Well, monsewer du Valcone, officially … murdering people might very well be a … profession where you come from, but here in Bruta we need a proper purpose for your visit.” He licked the tip of the pencil, sternly, and glared, politely, at du Valcone. “Purpose, if you will, for visit?”

“Murder. Ehm, yuuh, err, duh, err, chrrr. So good?” The man leaned in close, smelling of something awful. Probably wicked Beedaych floral scents. They liked florals on the continent, Gebill knew. “There has been, how you say, a terrible mistake that must be rectified immediately.”

Here’s the #WIPSnips entry for might.

But we don’t have diverse folk like Running Bear in this town, except for a precious few. Instead, we have the likes of Tiny, who refuses to hide her creative eccentricities, or Cowboy Brian who would never let on that his Halloween costume might have been inspired by a song about the YMCA. But it was. I caught him dancing to the jaunty tune in front of his bedroom mirror one night, and he loved himself in that moment. That’s what matters.

Maybe some day, the people of Zimmerman’s Corners will grow to appreciate the differences that make us special instead of whispering about them behind their hands. As if their own eccentricities didn’t make others whisper too.

I was introduced to Oli Jacobs with a little story called Deep Down There, about a gated community that wakes up to find a perfectly round, deep hole in their midst. What I liked most about it was the absurd situation and the quirkiness of the characters.

Anyway, check him out. I recommend it!
