Currently on a flight to Japan watching a Pentagon Assistant Press Secretary (Riley Podleski) work on a document in the open on her laptop. She spent the last hour copy and pasting headlines from articles critical of the Administration’s hostility toward the 1st amendment.

Damn it Democrats we don’t want any more old folks. It’s time to pass the torch to the oyster farmer

I made my weekly drive from Winston-Salem to Charlottesville, made it through a new episode of my favorite D&D podcast, then did two late hours in the office after a dinner of reheated chile rellenos. Finally, some fall chill in the air.

I voted for Mills twice. Im proud of her. But she’s an institutional pawn in this context.

I would suggest that Fetterman and Platner aren’t close at all. F is vocally pro-Israel, Platner pro-Palestine. Also, Platner’s not a troll, which Fetterman always was.

The Dem establishment appears to be putting its thumb hard on the scales against Graham Platner:

The DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee) has formed a joint fundraising committee with the campaign of Janet Mills.

It’s called “Maine Senate Victory 2026”:

Graham Platner. Please at least get the name right.

It’s in the handle. Stay out of my state’s politics, about which you know nothing.

I voted for Janet twice, loved her as governor. But this is a play by the National Dems to keep actual working-class voices outside the tent.

Platner 2026.

Institutional liberals have been whining about David Hogg and other young Dems wanting to primary the old guard for months.
canaanmorse.bsky.social
So young Dems primarying old Dems is wrong, but old Dems stepping in front of young Dems is okay?

I liked Janet Mills, but she’s 77 and not a member of the working class. This move has Chuck Schumer’s fingerprints all over it.

I don’t have a further point beyond that you should go hear Pastor Gwen Fry speak at St. Mark’s in Waterville if you enjoy being made to think, and if you surmise that serious Christians would necessarily loathe this administration. Im no believer, but I’m glad to have her in my community.

Her observation that Jeremiah’s order to grow gardens and multiply would have been bitterly unpopular among his exiled people highlighted the unforseeability and the overwhelming urgency of displacement. For me, it also threw the difference btw who has power and who doesn’t into sharp relief.

The first sermon of hers which I heard involved the woman in Luke 8 who grabbed Christ’s robe; her focus was not the miracle, but the transgressive state of the woman being a place that would have barred her. Yesterday’s was Jeremiah’s exhortation to captured Israelites to grow gardens in Babylon.

I’ve heard Pastor Gwen do a half-dozen sermons so far - I take my mum to church when I’m up - and I’ve found myself looking forward to them. She reads closely, inhabits emotional contexts, focuses obliquely on the thing *next to* the overplayed scene, which is often uncomfortably relevant.

feel-good pabulum recooked and served in the frame of some folksy anecdote to appeal to the youths. With zero intent to challenge or question, the sermon was something to be endured.

A couple years ago, my mother’s Episcopal church in Maine brought in a new pastor who did something different.

Re: the pleasant surprise of hearing interesting sermons in Waterville, ME.

Church services rub me wrongly in several ways: ploddingly chanted creeds, predictable music sung in an anti-acoustic box, affirmations of exclusive faith. And the sermons were often the worst part—
