I want to share something I've worked on effectively for most of my life, in different ways.

This vision of a calmer future, and analysis of how we get there, came after working in different sectors, on different continents – and seeing how obvious solutions are not working.

Trump to the Israeli parliament today, gloating about U.S. weapons supplied to Israel over the past two years:

"You obviously used them very well."

www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int...
Guardian headline: "Young lives cut short on an unimaginable scale: the 18,457 children on Gaza’s list of war dead"

The children’s names below appear on a list of victims of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, maintained by health authorities in the territory. As of the end of July it ran to 60,199 names, of whom 18,457 were under 18s. Far from comprehensive, the list does not include the thousands still buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings, as well as the war’s many indirect victims"

'it was getting heated'

Utterly extraordinary glimpse of what went on behind the scenes.

Political partisanship aside, smart diplomatic analysts have said for a while that recognition of Palestine by countries like UK, France, Canada, etc. was a vital "stick" to Trump's "carrot". But to see it hinted at is remarkable. ~AA

longitudinal HVDC lines will also eventually make a huge difference

legacy energy networks are due to be replaced, have to be upgraded, and so must change drastically

the next real environmental sustainability challenge will be using _less_ energy when it is cheap and abundant

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

they don't have to be privileged to be scared, and poverty in the US is no joke either

muting this
calmerfuture.bsky.social
X isn't even the only or worst disinformation source

I'm sorry, I feel frustrated and powerless about some of this too

but I'm going to mute you now, I have limited energy to deal with things so try to focus on stuff that is productive and useful, and ignore the things I feel are really not

Musk is a sociopathic and deluded arsehole, with dangerous amounts of power and influence — I think we're agreed on that — but Twitter or Tesla didn't make him rich

(they both lose money)

focusing on the things we see, and think we can effect, is maybe comforting but isn't really changing anything
calmerfuture.bsky.social
I'm a similar age to you by the way (Battle of the Planets was amazing!) and had written in the next post that I didn't have a simple solution — but maybe you hadn't read that?

(sorry to be harsh, I'm frustrated with lots of mainly white men with clueless responses)

something has genuinely been lost, actively poisoned and fractured — and there isn't a good solution

and the Twitter experience outside the US and UK is slightly different, because those markets and politics simply don't matter to Musk — and there are far more pressing issues to organise about

makes sense that these three Quaker chocolate companies and Lever Brothers all focused on worker conditions, housing etc as well

by 'that group' you mean most of humanity?

I'm... not sure. Have you tried asking them?
calmerfuture.bsky.social
I'm sure you have just convinced them, well done, great work all round

Now boasting about giving "Bibi" all the "best weapons" the US had .... and gets a standing ovation.

That's a standing ovation for the murder of tens of thousands of innocent people and Gaza reduced to rubble and a living hell.

This deserves more attention than it has received.

Gove: "we were too anxious as a government to secure those deals in order to show that Brexit was working".

Exactly as so many of us warned at the time, and as the government denied at the time.

Michael Gove admits that post-Brexit trade deals were bad for farmers
Michael Gove has admitted for the first time that the Australia and New Zealand trade deals negotiated by the former Tory government did not protect Britain’s farmers.

What the Twitter takeover did so effectively was fracture the way we get our news. If, for example, I want to get in-depth updates on Sudan I still check in with Twitter as that's where a lot of the biggest accounts are. There's no one-stop shop anymore.

My cartoon for the books page in this week’s @theguardian.com
Title: Where writers really get their ideas.

A writer, holding a note in his outstretched hand approaches a cart in the park. The front of the cart reads 'Fresh ideas' and a colourful umbrella shades the server who is reaching deep into the body of the cart (much as an ice-cream vendor might) and saying:
"I'm all out of mind-blowing concepts and heart-rending narratives, but I've got an acerbic observation, an unexpected outcome and a couple of amusing notions."
