FIGHT CLUB turns 26 today. I wrote for @bwdr.bsky.social about the rules of watching one of the last great films of 1999, of the 20th century, of the end times:

"The 8th and final rule of watching FIGHT CLUB?

"This is a fucking love story."

@criterion.bsky.social releasing BIRTH is big news. Been teaching it from a shitty DVD for years. Finally. A masterpiece gets its physical media due.

"What the THE DEAD sacrifices in character subjectivity, it makes up for in a kind of living, overhanging sense of the passage of time. Its inevitability. Our inability to control it. In conveying that, John Huston gets at the very heart of Joyce’s story. He gets at the inevitability of death."
You Have Promised Me A Thing Not Possible | The Dead (1987) - BW/DR
What John Huston's 'The Dead' sacrifices in character subjectivity, it makes up for in a kind of living, overhanging sense of the passage of time.

THE DEAD is coming to @criterion.bsky.social! John Huston’s stunning final film is a masterful adaptation of James Joyce, and now it’s finally coming to BluRay/4K! AND it includes the out-of-print documentary John Huston & The Dubliners! #Criterion

"This is precisely the sublime unity of composition & content that most recommends Demme’s film, and—for this unrepentant repeat offender—insures its viewing against diminishing returns: SILENCE is a movie about forensic psychology that demands and rewards forensic (as in precise) observation."
Where to Look: The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Consider how The Silence of the Lambs revolves around vision. Not only perception, but empathy and hindsight, and the non-empirical prick of intuition.

Beyond excited to contribute to Bright Wall/Dark Room @bwdr.bsky.social, and about Star Wars no less! A series whose heroic figures and iconic proverbs belie a simmering melodrama of teachers failing their students and students failing their teachers.
Master & Apprentice: The Failed Mentors of George Lucas’ Star Wars Saga
In Lucas' Star Wars saga, it’s not the teacher’s wisdom, but his failure, that drives the protagonist to his destiny.

One of the signature actresses of her or any era, and a woman who paved a path most Hollywood actresses -haven't- followed: dressing to express joy and a sense of self. On Diane Keaton: time.com/7325208/dian...
The Astonishing Versatility of Diane Keaton
Keaton, who died at 79, is often remembered for her comedic performance in Annie Hall, but she did so much more throughout her career.

Art can be our refuge from politics but it can also help us reflect on our politics (and our art). A piece of very fine writing that did both for me. 👇

I would watch Jaws: the Revenge every day for the rest of my life rather than watch two hours of an AI movie

an AI will generate some garbage spaceship, a bad movie will have people spray paint a bunch of household objects silver and stick them to a dumpster and call it a spaceship that kinda works from some angles with some clever camera work, which is just objectively better in every way

There are so many bad horror movies I’ve enjoyed watching just because you can tell everyone involved is doing it for the love of the art, AI is not capable of that
