It's also good when novels are huge and long and speak from the fourth dimension & delve into weird realms and hot sex, and reckon with major historical events via spiritual crises & apparitions, and throw in some sensory pleasures like meals & gossip, they're fundamentally a carrier bag.

it’s good when novels are huge and long and even occasionally boring, it’s fundamentally a durational form

the anxiety of time passing is one of the materials out of which the novel is built, or should be

Is anybody making a list of media "scientists" who have turned to using AI, so we know to stop trusting them

Seeing people nonchalantly post stuff like makes me feel like I'm going crazy honestly.
A post from an academic on blue sky that says: "I'm learning about "prompt engineering" when asking LLMs to extract data. I now add this to all instructions:

Style
Be concise, analytic, and specific (cite page/figure if provided). If essential info is missing, keep going but flag Unclear and exact data needed. Never invent data.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

with due appreciation for paring back the linguistic flourishes and not writing self indulgently - and god bless editing - I also think sometimes as a reader you just want to roll around in the language and if you like their style it can be a great pleasure to soak in someone just having fun with it

bring back "head hopping" fleeting multiple minor character POVs. vernacular modernism was onto a good thing with those and everyone's too snooty about it

descriptions and lots of detail about rooms and clothes and weather and what everyone looks like and objects and musings on all of the above are good actually. a lot of canonical advice these days seems to be make a terse plot of mostly dialogue happen in an invisible vacuum and no thanks I hate it

when I worked at a court reading people's employment tribunal claims someone once submitted a case for unpaid wages and every bullet point as the wad of cash flying away emoji. baller move.

if they were gonna make it up why hire anyone to do anything, just buy some pictures and the rest is fictional.

and again it's completely overlooked and invisiblised but the Church of England is a state religion. there is a cohort of seats in the house of lords reserved for bishops. there's lots of weird occluded kinds of influence

alao although it's the opposite public-facing vibe t in America - basically a secret and massively downplayed, instead of a required public image - a truly staggering and baffling amount of our most powerful politicians are very strongly and conservatively Christian

Yeah, this is sadly very naive. They've already done it to trans rights (which let them undermine basic principles of bodily autonomy) and made strides on anti-abortion rights - their "free speech protesters" outside abortion clinics regularly get to launder their views via the TV and print media

Right-wingers who think tactics they've used to criminalize abortion in the US will have the same kind of traction in the UK fail to grasp that religious fundamentalism is widely viewed as nuts in the UK, & has been for many decades, if not centuries.

As much chance of abolishing UK gun controls.

Also I believe they've already managed to fuck up women's sexual health services in Glasgow by attacking the main clinic because it also does trans stuff

That'll be the one you saw mentioned last week as having a 224-year waiting list for trans people
