We have put together a comprehensive eQTL map for D. melanogaster using thousands of genetically diverse flies 🪰🪰🪰🪰🪰 We hope this helps -as similar resources have done in yeast and humans- to understand how genetic variation 🧬 regulates complex traits variation 🪰 via transcriptional regulation ⬆️⬇️
Saturating the eQTL map in Drosophila: Genome-wide patterns of cis and trans regulation of transcriptional variation in outbred populations
Pallares et al. collect over a thousand RNA-seq and DNA samples from Drosophila melanogaster flies to investigate the genetic basis of gene expression variation. They find eQTLs for 98% of the genes a...

“These findings follow previous research which concluded that the more people learn about how AI works, the less they trust it. The opposite was also true — AI’s biggest fanboys tended to be those who understood the least about the tech.”
The More Scientists Work With AI, the Less They Trust It
A preliminary report shows that researchers' confidence in AI software dropped off a cliff over the last year.

In 2018, Charles Murray challenged me to a bet: "We will understand IQ genetically—I think most of the picture will have been filled in by 2025—there will still be blanks—but we’ll know basically what’s going on." It's now 2025, and I claim a win. I write about it in The Atlantic.
Your Genes Are Simply Not Enough to Explain How Smart You Are
Seven years ago, I took a bet with Charles Murray about whether we’d basically understand the genetics of intelligence by now.

Spookiest decoration at the "Zoo Goes Boo" event at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids? Giant model of parasitoid wasps hatching from cocoons affixed to their caterpillar host.
Large model of a green caterpillar, the back of which is covered by dozens of white cocoons. Wasps can be seen emerging from some of the cocoons.

As an evolutionary geneticist, I can say you are 100% correct. This is complete nonsense.

It's a solid commitment to listen in one block. But worth it over a period.

Have you listened to her United States Live?

It's so freaking great.

Shortbread data. Delicious, but useless here.

Another great and hilarious line from that album (to me at least):

"Thanks for showing me your... swiss army knife "

I am convinced that we have massively underestimated the impact of substitution reversions on the amount of molecular positive selection that we are able to see. Large populations will readily have reversing mutations readily available, and gene flow will also reintroduce ancestral alleles.

So, we have an unhealthy fixation with fixation?

Hopefully, this will be an effective wedge in these conversations. Crossing fingers.
