The finch on the child's other hand was an easy bird to tame, making reference to the education of children. We know the child is a boy from the sash with the 'Baptismal Medal' and also the shape of his collar and cap. The landscape in the background is intended to represent West Friesland.

Many portraits of children were produced during this period, full of symbolism. Fruit was a popular emblem, taking the idea of pruning and nurturing trees and plants to yield the best fruit.

We shared this painting from Cannon Hall Museum yesterday not realising it was the anniversary of his death.

Everdingen worked in Haarlem where he became part of a group known as the Haarlem Classicists. This painting is an unusual example of his own work.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekPForPink

Starting the week of pink objects with this beautiful late 19th century sweetmeat stand from Cannon Hall Museum.

Items like this were very popular as centrepieces on Victorian dining tables and would be used for serving sweetmeats or berries.
A decorative, pink and clear glass epergne centerpiece with curving arms and fluted flower-shaped vases, set in a matching ruffled glass bowl. The intricate design features delicate, transparent detailing.

Oops, well spotted that the puzzle didn't contain a child or an apple, if you try the same link again the puzzle now fits the description 🍏

We couldn't help but notice a Veiled Lady in last nights episode similar to the one on display at The Cooper Gallery

More views of this impressive marble sculpture:

Marble bust of a woman with a delicate veil carved over her face, creating the illusion of sheer fabric clinging to her features; the sculpture stands against a plain, light-coloured background. A close-up of a white statue with long hair and a floral crown, set against a patterned wallpaper. Gold decorative elements, resembling wings, are visible beside the statue. Video playback controls appear at the bottom.

Today is #NationalFitnessDay

On display in Experience Barnsley are chest expanders, made by Sandow's and sold in the early twentieth century.

They belonged to Arthur Jepson who was the Mayor of Barnsley in 1944 (which probably came in handy with all the chains he had to wear!)

It's the final moment
Of the final
And time finger's raised
And there's a tear in the eye.
Cos past the floodlights
Flying high
There's a lone bird soaring
In the Barnsley sky.

A poem about Dickie Bird by Ian McMillan which he read out on BBC Radio Sheffield earlier today:

It's the final over
Of the final test
And Time is bowling
The final ball;
And the innings that stretched To 92
Will end just here
'Cos it's umpire's call.

This was taken 16 years ago when I took Evan down to Barnsley for his first away match.
We met Dickie Bird outside the ground & talked for well over an hour about football, cricket & life in general.
A really genuinely lovely fella.

Rest In Peace, Dickie! x

I am saddened to hear about the death of Dickie Bird, one of the country’s finest and most celebrated cricket umpires.

A proud Yorkshireman as well as a great cricketer and role model for the sport - I offer my condolences to his friends and family.
A message of condolence from the Speaker of the House of Commons. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP.
