Hwæt! Aid for the free-trader, from all in hearing,
foemen besiege us, our fusion-oars failing,
gun-spool gone feeble, ship-breath escaping…

🎶 East bound and down, maybe forty fathoms
We gonna go to places they can’t drive
We’ve got a big tank of air and a whole bunch o’ missiles
I’m east bound, just watch ol’ Bandit dive 🎶

Sisyphus, but for obscenely wealthy people - every day they generate untold wealth and then it all gets distributed to the population and they have to get up and do it again tomorrow.😈

The obscenely wealthy tell us they have unique wealth-generating powers, so let them prove it every day

Walking up Flatbush, I see some folks with a yellow flag with a crown on it. Can't see it clearly, but I figure it's probably a “No Kings” flag, and they're going to a protest.

Then I see that they look like Hasidim, and realize that the text under the crown probably says “Moshiach.”

People talk a lot about bubbles/polarization while ignoring that when it comes to I/P you have two camps who are *literally speaking different languages*, where things like "Free Palestine" or "Zionist" or "globalize the intifada" can have completely opposite meanings depending on the speaker

But Magneto as Xavier’s former buddy is better than Magneto as a nameless guy with no past.

I've never actually played RuneQuest, despite owning it in two different editions.

FALL has the actual ending to the story that started with CRYPTONOMICON and continued in THE BAROQUE CYCLE.

Now I'm imagining E.E. Smith's Arisians teaming up with the cupids from Love Bullet to really super-charge their breeding program.

I noped out of Seveneves when I hit the part where one of the characters wants to breed people for high IQs.

I like a lot of his books, but ZODIAC is the only one with a decent ending. (Unless maybe some of his recent ones I haven’t read have good endings.)

That line went stale pretty quickly.

NEUROMANCER was published in 1984. Just twelve years later, in 1996, Neal Gaiman was poking fun at that line in NEVERWHERE.
Twenty

The world went dark, and a low roar filled Richard’s head, like the maddened growling of a thousand enraged beasts. He blinked at the darkness, held tight to his bag. He wondered if he had been foolish, putting the knife away. Some people brushed past him in the dark. Richard started away from them. There were steps in front of him; Richard began to ascend, and, as he did so, the world began to resolve, to take shape and to re-form.

The growling was the roar of traffic, and he was coming out of an underpass in Trafalgar Square. The sky was the perfect untroubled blue of a television screen, tuned to a dead channel.

I found most of Heinlein dated when I first encountered his work as a teen, in the early 1980s.

The book of his I liked best was The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, partly because the dialect it was written in didn’t sound like something from the 1940s.

So we need to implement Asimov-style AI to protect us from Clarke-style AI.
