#Mars is called the Red Planet because its surface is covered in rusty dust. If you were on Mars though, it wouldn't be red. It would be more of a ruddy yellow.
Indeed, you can at least see an American Football shape even through binoculars, if the rings aren't edge on!
Life Hack: Volunteering at observatories or schools to share your passion makes a positive impact on your community. Nothing makes one smile like seeing a kid's face light up when they learn something new.
Just stickin' it to Disney. 🐭
Happy #skircle @skircle.bsky.social Thursday! In 1793, during the French Revolution, Queen Marie Antoinette was executed. If you're on my list, you should celebrate that you still have a head! If you're not on my list, you should celebrate that you're keeping your head down and under the radar!⭕🔍🦛

24 men have been to the Moon. 4 who walked on it & 1 who flew above it are in their 90s. It's a testament to the caliber of Man that was picked to go to the Moon - and the Science that picked them - that they've lived long lives.

It's also likely they'll all be dead before we walk on it again. 🥮🔭🦛
The #Moon's surface is covered in fine, glassy dust caused by billions of years of impacts. In the next 10 years, there's a 95% chance that every man that has walked on the Moon so far will be dead.
Today in History: October 16, Cuban Missile Crisis begins.

If not for the courage of a Soviet sailor, the world might have been destroyed in a nuclear war. 💣🔍🦛

President John F. Kennedy tells the American people that the U.S. is setting up a naval blockade against Cuba, during a television and radio address, Oct. 22, 1962, from the White House. The president also said the U.S. would wreak “a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union” if any nuclear missile is fired on any nation in this hemisphere.” (AP Photo/Bill Allen)
Life Hack: Spend 10 minutes under a clear night sky to lower stress and improve mental clarity so you can solve problems faster and look like a genius.
Life Hack: Capturing the perfect celestial shot teaches patience, which can carry over into daily life. Try not to let it become an obsession.
Every atom in your body was forged in the core of a star; we are literally made of stardust. 98% of the universe is Hydrogen and Helium. Everything else was made by stars converting these materials into other elements.
Life Hack: Planning to capture a deep-space nebula requires discipline, which translates to other aspects of life. I am a zen master of planning. Not so good at executing. :-)
The North Star, Polaris, stays in the same spot in the sky while others seem to move. But it's not really at the center. Check out Steve Brown's amazing #Astrophoto at https://bsky.app/profile/sjbastro.bsky.social/post/3letlckdbk22s for a demonstration.
Life Hack: Replace movie night with a romantic evening of stargazing for a unique and memorable experience. Bring food and wine (or whatever) and have a nighttime picnic under the stars!
Galaxies form and evolve through collisions, mergers, and the influence of dark matter. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is due to collide with a neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, in about 4-5 billion years. Pretty sure it will be raining where I live and I'll miss it.
But SpaceX does it without all those pesky safety precautions.
Damnit Josh. I'm going to bed early.
