So much of the reaction to the latest Gaza deal acts as if Trump took office amidst a raging war, which simply isn't true.

There's a tendency in US media to praise Trump whenever the opportunity arises, as if they need to make up for all the factually accurate reporting that makes him look awful.
Opinion | Trump’s Nobel peace prize campaign is the least important part of the Gaza deal
If the ceasefire holds, the administration deserves much credit. But the fixation on Trump getting a prize distracts from things that actually matter.

Trump took office with a Israel-Hamas ceasefire in place, then announced a vision for Gaza as a US-owned resort, with most Palestinians living there gone. Israel restarted military ops in March and imposed famine. Thousands of dead Palestinians later, the Trump admin helped broker another ceasefire.

They don’t see themselves as enforcing immigration laws. They see themselves as deciding who gets to be American

"During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she 'doesn’t look like' a Greeley."

Chicago Tribune: Greeley, who was born at Illinois Masonic hospital and is adopted, carries a copy of her passport just in case she runs into federal agents.

“I am Latina and I am a service worker,” Greeley said. “I fit the description of what they’re looking for now.”

During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she “doesn’t look like” a Greeley.

“They said this isn’t real, they kept telling me I’m lying, I’m a liar,” Greeley recalled. “I told them to look in the rest of my wallet, I have my credit cards, my insurance.”

we have to be willing to just fuck with foreign governments in order to promote pro-democracy forces and harm pro-authoritarian forces in those countries

one thing that has been obvious for a while is this aspect of the authoritarian internationale: they recognize that their allies abroad are not *countries* but *political movements* within foreign countries.

time we liberals woke up and recognized this--because it's the truth.

Or maybe, just maybe, what was obvious in 2024 was correct: Netanyahu fully backed Trump and would not deal with Biden because Trump would give him a free hand to escalate the starvation, bombing, and do full ethnic cleansing. Which he then did, until Netanyahu embarrassed him by bombing Qatar.

Hey y'all, I am headed back from a work weekend. Won't land until midnight, and then up early to make sure my kids get to school. I am already feeling under the weather, so I am going to skip the livestream tomorrow. I'll be back on 10/20 with The Gospel of Peter Thiel Part II.

10/20. 5:30 ET.

13 year olds, by and large, cannot really be bad, criminal, or degenerate in their core.

They are children.
aselrod.bsky.social
This is also reflected in the treatment of trans youth. There’s not much concern for the fear or despair caused by scrutinizing these kids and forcing back into various closets.
aselrod.bsky.social
The use of terror, intimidation, and violence against children is not really an incidental part of what DHS is doing.

If you see immigration and law enforcement as being about fashioning a disciplined, homogenous society, then children are not exempt from that.

It’s hard to read stories like this and not think at least a little about @swordsjew.bsky.social’s passages on discipline and child abuse in Wild Faith

I posted about this on X, and Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS spokesperson, QTed me to say the kid was actually a hardened criminal arrested with a knife and a gun.

So far she has provided no evidence of this. I share this to give DHS's response, and for the possibility she is telling the truth.
My original post on X: "This makes NO SENSE. A 13-year-old was arrested by local police for unknown reasons, and then turned over to ICE, which is detaining him far away from his mother — who is going through immigration court, has an asylum application on file, and is legally authorized to work." Underneath that I posted a link to the opening paragraphs of the article and the headline.

In response, DHS Spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin, @TriciaOhio, wrote: "Here are the facts: he posed a public safety threat with an extensive rap sheet including violent assault with a dangerous weapon, battery, breaking and entering, destruction of property. He was in possession of a firearm and 5-7 inch knife when arrested."

That is what “out over your skis” means. And what people declaring Bari Weiss’s just started tenure at CBS News a success are doing. Getting ahead of themselves. And they may end up face-planting. Is that clear enough?

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

The priest on the right is holding a monstrance. It’s used to display a piece of communion bread — which Catholics believe becomes the literal body of Christ when it’s consecrated — for worship.

A monstrance is normally only used in *very* solemn ceremonies.

Given that anyone with a brain ought to recognise how many “national dishes” were impossible pre-Columbian Exchange, it’s nice to finally see pushback on the inherently ethnonationalist/racist claim that some cultures have “authentic dishes” and other “parasitic” cultures only “steal” them

My (gentle, self-inclusive) addition to this is that we can all do a better job of considering and including the concerns of indigenous peoples across the Western Hemisphere, no matter where we are. I generally loathe internet shorthand, but “Indigenous Americas fed the world” is Not Wrong.

This week, MAGA figures claimed Kristi Noem "stared down" violent antifa protesters in Portland. Turns out they were talking mostly about a guy in a chicken suit.

This episode opens a window into how MAGA propaganda works and MSM failure to handle it. 1/
