I just realized that my favoritest author, C. J. Cherryh, is like 83, and still actively publishing despite age-related health issues. Her jacket covers when I discovered her in the 90s has a young woman on them, but she was already 60.

I am occasionally reminded at how cringey theoretical computer science has been in the past, especially when it attempts to use analogies to human situations to illustrate theoretical points.

This is great news. We've hired the classicist Spencer Klavan to teach at New College of Florida. Goodbye gender studies; hello, Greek literature.

Truly excited to be teaching an online survey course in Greek literature this fall semester @NewCollegeofFL. Even more excited that it's open to the public. Please join in here! We'll be reading Homer, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, and lots more.

life is episodic, and many "artistic" attempts to deviate from narrative norms aren't more authentic, true-to-life, or as intellectually stimulating or challenging as their proponents are hoping they'd be

The problem with “virtue signaling” as a rhetorical framework was always that it pressed you not toward deeper and more sincere acts of virtue, but away from goodness as a goal at all.

at least German had the dignity to make it something like "bejahen"
encountered "okeja" as a verb in Swedish ("to OK" something)

do i fear rice? yes. fear marks a healthy respect; with respect comes understanding. in order to temper and tame the grain, you must subject it to Various Flavours. saffron... coconut... coriander and lemon... these are the songs that soothe the beast. understand this, and you may kiss my rude son
Swedish has pitch accent with semantic and morphological effects. It's not tonal like Chinese, but it's not a prosodic difference.
yes they feel qualified to opine on the mind in a way they wouldn't (usually) about protein kinases or whatever, this has many reasons
Most people have folk beliefs about cognition, intelligence, AI, language, etc. The "AGI" proponents are going to lean into that, and it only helps them if you chew people out for not reading your paper or asking stupid-sounding questions or whatever.
I swear the sealion meme and the attitude it represents is one of the worst things that happened to progressive internet discourse.

Currently attending a conference & our field is quite a bit into fancy modeling, so it’s time to repost this blog post.

Don’t try to squeeze your research question into whatever model is fashionable right now; try to build the right model for your research question.
