UPDATE: Following the firing of the director of the student newspaper, Indiana University has now cut the print edition of the newspaper entirely.

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director
By IDS staff
Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm · Updated Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

The forces of white Christian nationalism are ascendant all over and our newsroom leaders are not only refusing to call it out, they are acquiescing.

Politico received an initial tip that a Taylor staffer had a swastika neatly pinned to his cubicle during a zoom call. When confronted, the congressman’s press office pretty implausibly sought to present the situation as a police matter, and Politico went along with that in its headline and lede.

I do not think that it is a stretch to suggest that the Roberts Court as currently constructed would have any problem at all with facially neutral Jim Crow laws. (That's, in part, what makes this such a good/important question.)

a real question for the roberts majority is what in their view distinguishes jim crow disenfranchisement from majority-minority districts? a related question is what in their view made the typical jim crow law — which was facially neutral — unconstitutional?

The Bush/Cheney US Attorney scandal lasted months, generated dramatic congressional hearings, led to many resignations, and contributed to the ouster of an attorney general.

Trump’s ongoing campaign against prosecutors is, in some ways, worse. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

ICE arrested comedian Robby Roadsteamer for singing a parody of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” in a Jeffrey Epstein the Giraffe costume outside their facility.

He sings “If you hate brown people / and you are a Nazi” and ICE thugs grab him and drag him into detention. No violence—just speech.

SCIENCE POLICY NEWS:

During Yom Kippur, all the members of the High Energy Physics Advisory Committee (HEPAP), myself included, received a letter thanking us for our service and telling us essentially that the almost 40 yo standing federal advisory committee was no more. ⚛️🧪🔭

Why that matters 🧵

Mike Johnson might not care, but it’s not every day when a sitting member of Congress gets hit with a restraining order.

In the “most controversial member on Capitol Hill” contest, Florida Republican Cory Mills is the new frontrunner. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

A musician, Oriana Korol, was peacefully playing clarinet with her protest band outside ICE facilities in Portland, OR.

When the band started playing “Ghostbusters,” ICE thugs suddenly poured outside, slammed her into the mud, arrested her and took her to a jail 9 miles away in Vancouver, WA.

A law was passed a long time ago to place a plaque on the wall to honor the officers who defended the Capitol on J6. The plaque is done and has been ready to hang up for a long time. MAGA Mike refuses to comply with that law, which is a slap in the face to every officer. bsky.app/profile/atru...

In police and court documents, the officer who drove the car claimed that he had been heading straight west on E. Second St. in the East Village, and had tried to avoid Davis, who he said slammed into the NYPD vehicle. The surveillance video that captured the crash contradicts that claim.

"they've always been like this" is always a tempting savvy take but it is just not true that Republican staffers were 100 percent open Nazis back in 2004, or hell even 2014. they just weren't

there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!
amandamarcotte.bsky.social
For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.
