Yeah. I understand being specific about word count when it comes to determining various award categories. But I think in real life, there should be a bit more flexibility. Especially when the point of the project is to celebrate middle-length fiction in all its variety.

I'd love to hear your faves.
Thanks for the share! You know how much I love short stories, novelettes, and novellas!
There's a lot of character background that is hinted at, fodder for future stories.

The story reminded me of Erle Stanley Gardner's Cool & Lam books, which I love.

(Also, yes ... I am aware I missed Day 3 of Novella November. Things happen.)
There are colorful characters from all sides of the law, a simmering level of threat, a classic (if underused here) secretary for the pair of PIs, and a solid resolution. I also like that Kade is gay (not openly because of the time period but not self-loathing either) while Karger is straight.
This is Duncan's first Kade & Karger story (as far as I know) but I hope it won't be the last. It's a tightly-told New Orleans-set period mystery about 2 private eyes who get involved investigating an attack on a well-liked street performer. Of course, the case turns out to be about more than that.
For Day 4 of #NovellaNovember, let's talk about Randy Duncan's
"Kade & Karger: Big Trouble for Lil' Easy." Word count wise, this is probably closer to novelette than novella, but I'm not being super strict about the line between the two (or between novella and short novel).
If you're a fan of folk horror or the trad-folk, folk-rock, or psychedelic-folk music genres, or a fan of behind the scenes looks at how bands implode, this novella is definitely for you. I cannot recommend it highly or often enough.
I have multiple print copies (including a cool alipcased edition), all of which I should have taken photos of before I left for today's 5 hour drive. So here are photos of the audiobook and e-book covers from my tablet.
For day two of #NovellaNovember, I re-listened to the full cast audiobook of Elizabeth Hand's 'folk horror via VH1's Behind The Scenes' classic WYLDING HALL, which I have re-read or re-listened to every year around Halloween since I first discovered it in 2019.
Surgery was three weeks ago and I've recovered nicely. But it messed with my ability to concentrate so reading slowed down a lot. Or at least that's my story because it couldn't possibly be that I spend too long looking at my phone. 😁
October was a rough month reading (and listening)-wise for me. I'm blaming it all on the gall bladder. I started rereading Dracula and didnt finish but I'm going to read it around novellas.
I know from my sister's cats how hard it is to get them to stop doing anything they've really set their minds to. Good luck!
"Seas and Shores" is narrated by Simon Torquill-Lorden. I have enjoyed Simon's growth across the short stories snd novellas he's narrated (check Seanan's Patreon) and this is yet another pivotal moment for him. McGuire sticks the landing with a swell of emotion that is well-earned.
It's #NovellaNovember! I may not manage to read actually read a novella every day this month, but we'll see.

Today I read "Seas and Shores," the bonus novella in @seananmcguire.bsky.social 's latest October Daye release (Silver and Lead). I'll try to avoid spoilers because its so recent.
Happy Halloween / Samhain / All Hallows Eve / etc.

I figured today would be a good day to do a search for all of the book or movie reviews or other posts give tagged with the word "horror" on my website.

Every time I hear someone—most of the time a well-meaning someone—say, "I don’t believe in writer’s block," I lean hard into the "well-meaning" part, but as someone who does, absolutely, run into what most of us mean by "writer’s block" on the regular, it can be hard not to just flip the bird.

Oh wow! I've slowly started to do this. If not a book from each country then at least a short story or novella from each country.
Hi! I'll check our your books asap!
And havent read any of these three ... so thanks for the suggestions!
Love it. The only one of those I havent read is the Gailey. I own it, though.
I really should work on the one I trunked, or start a new one. But even if I don't, I'm going to talk about everyone I know who does!
