Read some super fun books. Wrote some reviews.

You should check out the books too if you want some gritty, fun fantasy adventures with plenty of banter and brilliant character work!
Five star The Envoys of War by Dave lawson goodreads review: This one was such a fun, and slightly silly(in the best way), fantasy adventure/quest book!

The character work was fantastic in this one and to me, really what pushed this into 5-star rating territory. We get 3 POV's and each is voicey and distinct, never allowing any confusion as to who we're following. The characters are also very consistent and realised, they don't change their personalities to conform to a pre-determined plot(something that's a pet peeve of mine).

The plot was also solid, subtly changing its course as we go on but it all makes sense for the characters and their motivations so it felt like the natural progression of things. Five stars The Pawns of Havoc by Dave Lawson goodreads review: After loving The Envoys of War, I knew I had to grab this one the moment the audiobook was released and I was not disappointed!

This one follows Cork, a side character in Envoys although I believe this story is set before the events of Envoys. Where Envoys have more silly streaks this one also has plenty of humour and great character work.

It's a novella and a quick read but that doesn't mean there isn't loads of action and heart packed into it. I particularly enjoyed some of the more serious internal monologue from Cork after things had gone to sh!t, it helped flesh out sides of him I had worried wouldn't ever be addressed despite all the bloody mayhem.

I had to go with "greeting" as a synonym. This is Sergei's POV; his older brother Kolya has shown up unexpectedly (as he often does).

(Kolya, incidentally, is a MC in my short story "Wishes", which is available for free with my newsletter.)

He grinned suddenly and said, “Seryoshenka.” My little kid, family name. Then he pitched his cigarette to the asphalt of the parking lot, ground it beneath his boot, and grabbed me by the arms, embarrassing me by kissing both cheeks the Russian way. I knew he knew it embarrassed me to do it in public, but he was just enough of an asshole big brother to do it because it made me uncomfortable. On the other hand, I guess there are ways siblings let you know they’re different from strangers and acquaintances. You can secretly appreciate those behaviors, even if they’re a pain in the ass. The point is, them being a pain in the ass makes it feel like everything is in its proper place.
He smelled like cigarette smoke and some kind of soap or cologne and a little bit like sweat because it was hot, and we were both sticky with humidity. His cheeks always seemed to have just enough stubble to scrape mine in the greeting kiss, like he was perpetually in need of a shave or undecided about growing a beard. All these things let me know he’d stepped into my life again for a brief, disorienting moment.
“I’m proud of you,” he said gruffly. “You’re really doing something with your life.”

#WIPSnips 10th October 'prize'

I have this one! It's not a WIP, but here's a snippet from In Midnight's Shadow. Alyas is proposing to steal a famous treasure from a temple and Esar just knows this is a Very Bad Idea.

Quote from In Midnight's Shadow for WIPSnips 10th October prompt 'prize'

“That was the easy part.” Alyas unfolded a sheet of parchment. “Getting hold of this was much more difficult.”
It was another sketch. Though ‘sketch’ didn’t do it justice. In the centre of the page, surrounded by crabbed notes, was an illustration of the Empress Ivane casket, colours and details picked out by a skilled artist. Esar scanned the notes, what he could read of them, then the faded signature in the corner. Not any artist. The artist. Eirik Hagan. One of the most famous Isyr craftsmen who had ever lived and the man who had made the box.
He met Alyas’s eyes with a sinking feeling. “Where did you get this?”
“Same place I got the Isyr. The Temple of Yholis. Their library is a treasure trove.”
Esar dropped his head in his hands with a groan. “You robbed Yholis so we can rob Ithol? Have you lost your bloody mind?”
“I didn’t steal it,” Alyas protested, retrieving his prize. “I borrowed it.”
“Do they know you borrowed it?”
“If I’d asked, they might have said no.”
“Then you stole it. And I don’t want to know about the rest. We’ll have no friends left by the time this is over.”

Request for writers who consider me a friend, especially those of you who do WIPSnips or other engagement posts talking about your wip:

If you have the time and energy, post here about your wip. Give me CONTEXT. Tell me who your characters are and their relationships. Tell me about your setting.

things are a little tense. Then there's Maddie, Cam's sister, who dreams alternate futures. There's a bit of a romance here with Sergei, but it's a subplot, this isn't romantasy.

Sergei's sister Anya and brother Kolya also show up, not as POVs, though.

Cam has his own weird "abilities", premonitions which manifest as extreme anxiety. And he's really good at swordwork, but of course that's just a sport in Illinois in 1988, right? (nervous laughter)

Sergei and Cam are pretty much like brothers, but they have had a recent split and...

...is also trying to find her by digging through his nightmares (of which, he has many). Sergei sees things other people don't, like not-rats and actual , alive bugs which he thinks are listening in on him. As the book opens, he's using his best friend Cam as cover at a party...

I'm revising my giant Cold War portal/epic fantasy Through Dreams So Dark into 2 books, so right now I'm working on the first part. Sergei's mother was supposedly killed while escaping the USSR with her family, but Sergei has been told that she might not be dead. A creepy government organization...

It's also a convenient date to add up the cumulative copies and see how much it's sold in its lifetime.

I do, probably because it took so long to get it finished and published! Just getting it out into the world felt like a victory I wanted to remember. I've marked its anniversary with a sale at least once, but usually I just think, "hey, it's been x years now!"

Quite a beautiful review of my little novella, The Moribund Monarch's Masterpiece, by Vivian Cicero from Grimoire Ink.

It's always delightful to know that something I wrote evokes such strong emotions in a reader & that alone makes participating in #SFINCS worth it for me.
