Two decades apart, kids click the wrong link and summon something unexpected. In 2004 it’s a slapstick ghost and plenty of hijinks; in 2021 it’s a predatory male and gender dysphoria. I explore the unexpected links between two films.
I Downloaded a Gender
Exploring the uncanny rhymes between I Downloaded a Ghost (2004) and Jane Schoenbrun’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021), where digital hauntings mirror adolescent identity.

A good a reason as any to post this old photo of the director with some bloke.

He was a great leveller. Here’s a long movie about a man painting a tree. Here’s why you might want to see that. Here’s King Ralph. Here’s why you might want to see that. Goodnight everyone. Perfect! Even if he hated Army of Darkness.

I miss Barry Norman. Through him I heard about The Draughtsman's Contract, The Quince Tree Sun, Man Bites Dog, countless others. As a kid, even though I wasn’t imminently going to see those films & he didn’t necessarily like them himself, he made cinema seem like a chocolate box of possibilities.

The cheekiest of Nando’s.

New trailer for #RunningManMovie from @edgarwright.bsky.social. We haven’t had a great blockbuster in a while - I’m hoping this is it.

Kelly Reichardt’s heist tale THE MASTERMIND announces itself as one kind of movie (jazzy Jarmusch-esque comedy, loosely hung around a crime framework) and then gradually wanders away from that to become something else entirely… an observational Bresson morality study? V good. ★★★★

GDT’s disappointing FRANKENSTEIN played @ BeyondFest; A sumptuous production that can’t allow its Creature to be anything less than a perfect little angel, a GDT trope that’s ossified within his work to the point it limits his vision & hobbles his movies. Not every monster needs to be unimpeachable!
Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein – Venice Review
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is a sumptuous gothic spectacle, thick with atmosphere and design, yet weakened by unsubtle storytelling, heavy-handed voiceover, and pacing that tests patience. ★…

Deadly Friend, with a bullet!

When it comes to 80s trash horror, I’m surprised that people praise forgettable
slop like (eg) Chopping Mall when genuinely insanity like Deadly Friend exists. From about 30 mins in it’s just wild choice after wild choice.

What do you think is Wes Craven’s best film that isn’t part of the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET or SCREAM franchises?

I feel like everyone will have a different answer and that’s really interesting to me.

Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani’s Reflection in a Dead Diamond 💎 at #LFF2025.

Another BDSM ASMR pop culture kaleidoscope fetish movie from the pair, and once again it’s a bit more stylish but a bit less interesting than the better examples of their choice of genre.

★★★
Reflection In A Dead Diamond – LFF review
Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s Reflection in a Dead Diamond turns Euro-spy fetishism into pure design. Fabio Testi haunts a world of mirrors, memories, and immaculate surfaces where sensation re…

I caught about 40 mins of Radu Jude’s Kontinental ‘25 today before I had a dip out to see Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, and while that film was good, and I don’t regret my choice… I can’t deny that Jude is more my wavelength. Shout out to the handful of folks in that screen, they are my people.

Thunderbolts is the best MCU movie since Endgame.

#NowWatching "Thunderbolts*"

Best superhero film of the year by some distance.

A meditation on superhero fatigue, the death of American exceptionalism, a reframing of the Obama era “Avengers” framework for the Trump era, millennial disillusionment and existential ennui.

Cleanly told, well-made.

HAMNET is another new movie that has “This film may not be used to train AI” in its credits. Interesting to see this kind of thing from smaller films and larger films alike (Hamnet has Universal distribution.)
andrewpope.bsky.social
Hamnet really is that emotional juggernaut for which you’ll be on board or not. Despite a slightly intrusive score and some over-egged face-acting from Buckley at the end… reader, I *sobbed*. ★★★★½

Casting Noah Jupe as Hamlet and Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet? Chloe Zhao, you maniac.

(Film excellent)
