This helped me today. Small Kindnesses, by Danusha Laméris
Small Kindnesses
by Danusha Laméris

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk
down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs
to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”
when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.
And sometimes, when you spill lemons
from your grocery bag, someone else will help you
pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.
We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,
and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile
at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress
to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.
We have so little of each other, now. So far
from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these
fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,
have my seat,” “Go ahead—you first,” “I like your hat.”

I don't know, let's find those people and talk to them!

People do not like this opinion but I stand by it. Read a lot. Fall in love with reading. I have faith that most people who love to read will want to read good things and will find them.

Your life will not be less rich if you never read Great Literature and instead consume nothing but genre and trash/smut/junk. Quantity over quality!

(There's plenty of genre/trash/smut/junk books that are actually Great Literature, read enough of anything and you're find it.)

Early exposure to Macbeth→ lifelong love of horror, and maybe why I felt I could argue to my 7th grade teacher @stephenking.bsky.social counted as "literature." When I refused to shut up she sent me to study hall.

And now I get to be on @thelosersclub.bsky.social to talk about it for HOURS.
anamariecox.bsky.social
Totally agree, but I am going with my unhinged version because I thinking the primary purpose of reading is for pleasure! If you don't love the experience of reading, then you're not gonna do it.

So read a bunch and see if your palette expands, and if not... cool?
anamariecox.bsky.social
I also think there's plenty of Great Literature that's also genre/trash/smut and those are some of my favorites. Will always be grateful to my mom for telling me Macbeth as a bedtime story as a kid so that when I finally encountered the play I was, like, ooooooh, the one with blood!
anamariecox.bsky.social
I honestly can't tell what your point is!

It's so strange to think of how much less suffering there would be in the world if a certain slice of America gave just a tiny bit more of a shit about keeping a white supremacist out of the White House.

You'd think they'd have used a photo that didn't make it look like he was being squeezed out of a birth canal.

There's always been a non-zero part of me that would happily live off grid and grow my hair out long, bathing in streams and not talking to anyone but the woodland creatures. The current troubles have seen some growth in that non-zero percentage.

Used, yes. "Rampant"? Probably not.

But you know who used it more and with more encouragement from top brass?? The allies.

Methamphetamine for Hitler's Germany: 1937 to 1945
Ray J Defalque 1, Amos J Wright

PMID: 22849208 DOI: 10.1016/s1522-8649(11)50016-2
Abstract
Methamphetamine was synthesized in Germany in 1937 and commercially released in 1938. It became a popular stimulant for tired night workers and a recreational drug for young people until mid-1941 when it became a controlled substance. It was abused by the armed forces during World War II when it was distributed by some commanding officers (occasionally over the objections of the units' physicians) to prevent or treat the fatigue of exhausted troops and thus allow them to survive, despite the strict restrictions issued by the Army Inspectorate. There is no evidence for the claim that the use of Pervitin was encouraged by the Nazi government to create a "superman." In fact the Health Leader L. Conti strongly discouraged its use.

I wonder if he might call it the "final" one?

Reminder: The belief that Nazis were rabid drug users is not entirely correct (some were, it wasn't pervasive). Beyond debate: They sent alcoholics/addicts who weren't Nazis to concentration camps.

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!
A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.

Legendary interview moment with the director of Morbius about Jared Leto’s behavior on the set of Morbius

uproxx.com/movies/morbi...
I heard a story about filming and I want to see if this is true. Someone told me that Jared Leto was so committed to playing Michael Morbius that even when he had to go to the bathroom, he would use his crutches and slowly limp to get to the bathroom. But it was taking so long between for pee breaks, that a deal was made with him to get him a wheelchair so someone could wheel him there quicker and he agreed to that. Is this true?

Yes.

RIP Diane Keaton
My favourite picture of her where everyone else is giving it their best Blue Steel & she looks like she’s just wandered in off the street looking super cool.
She was allowed to wear her own clothes & her wonderful personality shines out.
What a unique talent & human being.
