Great advice.

I'd add to this: don't overthink "cover letters" for most publications. It's okay to just send a salutation, a request that they consider your work (with, maybe, a word count), and a closing

Short and sweet is generally best. Aim for around 250-350 words. It should be a succinct, engaging introduction to your manuscript and your writing background.
