Cypher is the greatest mutant and has been misused from the get; He should have been an international superspy experienced in hacking and linguistics, and physically trained like James Bond

What's an opinion about X-Men that'll get you sent to jail? Is Jean really interesting or really boring? Should Logan have stayed dead? Do you think a certain x-mens outfit is positively horrendous even though people seem to love it?

The Brood Saga is better than Dark Phoenix imo 🤷

I despise Jeffrey Wells with a fire of a thousand collapsing suns but I appreciate that Glenn Kenny is out here doing the work so I don't have to visit his trash site.

Jeffrey Wells - the underwear skidmark of movie bloggers.

I'm holding off playing it, I know it'll become my life for a few weeks, and I just got too much shit going on. But I can't wait.

My Ghost of Yotei review is up. Its just an absolute banger, a huge step up from Tsushima in every aspect and my God, Erika Ishii deserves to be an A-lister after this.

Go read.

To teach it correctly requires a more in-depth study than just reading it aloud in class. And you can't send them off on their own, either. Someone said that it's fine to show movies, or use more modern interpretations as an entry point, and I agree. But diving in cold? No way.

That's fair, and the symbolism and wordplay of much of his plays not only flies over kids' heads, but you also can't explain it because of those issues.

Shakespeare is difficult for normies. I don't know a single kid in my age group that didn't complain about it. For people like us, it wasn't hard because we eat this stuff up, but for the general population, it's really hard work and they begin to think all reading is like that.

After you gasp, you know I'm right.

Schoolkids shouldn't be taught Shakespeare except in general terms. They resent reading him, and extrapolating that, resent reading in general. Now if they get there on their own, great. But Shakespeare should be reserved for college.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

I look forward to whatever creative endeavor Marc Maron does next. Hell of a way to finish. A great podcast.

More than a decade ago, I sat down with @marcmaron.bsky.social in his garage to tape something new called a podcast. This time, he came to me to record his last episode.

We talked about the power of conviction, decency in an age of division, and the true story of America.

I think my favorite all-time Coen Brothers joke is:

"Lord. You can imagine what happens next."

"He fixes the cable?"

"Don't be fatuous, Jeffrey."

They got any good sarsaparilla?

I still remember the phone number of the house I grew up in, and my family hasn't lived there for nearly 40 years.

Does anyone use their brains anymore?

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
alancerny.bsky.social
It should be there too.

Normally don’t care about such things, but this year’s Best Song Oscar category will be stacked and not much will fit in between WICKED, KPOP, and Diane Warren.

But “Took A Walk” from THE LONG WALK by Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. is beautiful, haunting, and works as a commentary for the film.

Awesome, congratulations!

Food: Olives. Tricked into eating one because I was told it was chocolate and the clash so put me off that I’ll never eat one again.

Film: DEAR ZACHARY. Brilliant film. Never gonna see it again.

Song: “Back on the Chain Gang” I respect what they signify but I hate the Pretenders. Never liked them.

“Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand”

Food: canned tuna fish

Film: Grease. I was horrified by its sexism from my first viewing at a sleepover and I remain correct

Song: Brown Eyed Girl. The worst

“Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand”

Food: cucumber, however if you pickle it I'll eat em all day

Film: Jacob's Ladder, avoided it for years then was tricked into seeing it

Song: the whole of the fucking moon

It's looking like DEATHSTALKER isn't opening in Houston this Friday. No times listed yet. They normally drop Wednesdays so I'll keep looking but know that I am extremely bummed.
alancerny.bsky.social
Nope, opened wide this weekend.

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN didn’t even make a million dollars this weekend. Lionsgate barely promoted it, and due to the subject matter they were probably terrified of being attacked. That’s no excuse, though. It’s a tremendous movie and deserved better. What a shame.
