we are recruiting a postdoc with interest in using genomics and molecular biology to study transcription factors. We have an R35 to fund the project/salary.

Think Nature Methods vs Nature Protocols
aemonten.bsky.social
Methods is a primary research paper: you've developed a new approach, you have benchmarked it and compared it to others, you show new results, validated it, and highlight why it is better. A protocol is a step-by-step description of a method validated elsewhere. It's a secondary paper.

And protocols. Should be there too.

It's nice to see in the Finish "Declaration for Open Science and Research 2025—2030" (doi.org/10.23847/tsv...):

"3.3. We recognise research data and methods as independent research outputs that are considered in the assessment and career advancement."

If only software was explicitly mentioned

So much this - you're an editor, take the reviewers advice into account and then make a decision! (There are times reviewers need to see a revision but it should be rare)
aemonten.bsky.social
On the other hand, I've received emails from reviewers complaining that they didn't see the paper again 😅

And now the paper has finally been accepted, I just wanna say to all the editors: PLEASE stop sending papers back out to reviewers after 1 (at most 2) round! It’s a burden on the system when a decision could be made without reviewers’ approvals. It’s not the reviewers’ job to have a final say!

It shouldn't be controversial to say that when journals don't rely on volume to survive, and can, instead, pick only what they consider to be best fit to their journals, that's a superior and more cost-effective system.

Also, that Gold OA is an abomination.

aemonten.bsky.social
No, Gold OA (paying an APC) is not a success.

In fact, the problems it has created have been profound.

What makes me really happy is that someone as experienced as yourself continues to see the value of professional editors in helping improve the writing :)
