Little known: Gilbert & Sullivan reviewed baked goods in southwest Cornwall. They found the following prices:

Newlyn: steak & kidney thruppence, chicken tuppence ha'penny
Mousehole: both 3d
Paul: s&k 2½d, chicken 2d
Gulval: both 2½d
Heamoor: s&k 2d, chicken 3d

Those were the pie rates of Penzance.

I described to someone the awkwardness I had shown them by saying that sometimes it is as if I am entirely made of elbows. Dear of unfamiliar elbows - that's me.

the funniest thing about this is that those of us who grew up in the divide all have a bunch of pre-cell phone numbers memorized and almost none afterwards

I know the home phone numbers of two of my childhood best friends from thirty years ago and none of the cell numbers of my college friends

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Bistro is nice, I had an hour to kill there earlier this year.

Why were there tiny crystal radio kits - about matchbox size as I recall - on early 80s cross-Channel ferries?

Not from me (pretty much nailed-on Autistic, on an ADHD diagnosis list *somewhere*) so feel free to disregard. I did find the section in this that references tree-climbing to be interesting. youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/bees-in-my...

"French bangers" were the elite French-school-trip-must-buy in my era. Mostly for resale to one's more cowardly classmates once they had been brough back to Blighty, at a substantial mark-up. Oh, and crystal radio kits for the nerds.

"Licking" and "disinfection" are not exact synonyms, but close enough.

Rail stations reopened as a result of Transport Act 1962 (Amendment) Act 1981.

What policy themed visitor trail would you do upon retirement? I would pilgrimage to visit the 100 Rishi Sunak outdoor chess sets around the country. I genuinely think it would be one of those fun random things that would take me to places I’d never otherwise go to

You've got it. Once you know about tuning 'half step down' you'll find there's a lot of it about. I think it makes life easier for some singers, too.

I now have a vision of a British Gravy Laboratory where folk in tweed lab coats carry out experiments in gravy science.

I am in a gravy coma - their worst will be as nothing to me.

Seeing as @yakhunt.net got some ribbing about the sausage/mash ratio in a photo of his dinner, thought I'd stick my neck out. Forgetting that I drown it in gravy to the extent that the mash is obscured. (Also steamed my lens up.)
Three-off sausages, peas, there's some mash under the snorkers honest! Coated with glossy gravy.

That sounds about right.

Maybe TVS, maybe Southern - I am well old and I recall seeing it long before NG his cinemas.

I take it you see that is named (black plate on cabside) "Special Delivery"? Well, it certainly lived up to its name that day, eh readers?
