🚨 New preprint! Great work lead by @neuroanup.bsky.social: insular traveling waves that shape memory. 🧠🌊
The insula isn’t just along for the ride—it helps direct the flow.

Even with perfect targeting, #DBS electrodes can bend.

On the CNS Journal Club Podcast, Dr. Kim Burchiel interviewed me about my research on how brain tissue mechanics shape electrode paths + deviation.

Could brain stimulation help restore movement after #stroke?

The RESTORE DBS trial, led by Dr. André Machado and Cleveland Clinic, is now enrolling at Jefferson!

CNN recently covered this innovative approach: amp.cnn.com/cnn/2023/08/...

Where do you draw the line? 🧠✏️
Literally.

We’re asking epilepsy surgeons to sketch their ATL resection. It takes ~10 min on a desktop computer

Back from my first @ismrm.bsky.social —great science, thoughtful conversations, and a chance to present our work on how MRE helps explain DBS electrode bending! Grateful to collaborate with teams at UDelaware and Villanova. Definitely not my last ISMRM. And it didn't hurt that it was in Honolulu.

What the FDA will likely do is produce *something* - just not a vax that includes strains chosen based on the committee & WHO's reasoned input.

🔹️They'll throw darts at a board, & the vax won't be a good match (it's tough to get it right even *with* annual input), but folks will think "see,...

NIH’s new policy capping indirect cost funding at 15% is a gut punch to academic research. Cutting support for lab upkeep & admin costs means fewer resources for scientists & slower progress. This could seriously hurt innovation...

How is it that Parkinson's name has been perpetuated in our language, but the man himself has been forgotten? What do you know about the man himself? Nadeem Toodayan and Andy Lees have written a brilliant new article sharing the details and the history not only of the memorial, but of the man.

This is what happens when a surgeon puts together a 'bouquet garni'...😬
chenwumd.bsky.social
Huge prime rib for Christmas dinner🎄🤤

Dry brined overnight, injected with garlic, rosemary, & thyme infused wagyu tallow. Smoked for 4 hours with a rosemary, sage, & thyme 'bouquet garni' tossed in every hour. Finally seared to develop a nice crust before a long rest.

Happy holidays everybody!!!

A simply fantastic presentation by Marc Guenot from the University Hospital of Lyon about thermo-SEEG!

Approximately 30% seizure free at 2 months & 10% at 1 year.

But greater utility may be diagnostic value: 92% PPV & 45% NPV of outcome after resection if >2 months of seizure freedom after RF

Great summary of #LITT for mesial temporal lobe #epilepsy by Brett Youngerman @columbiauniversity.bsky.social!

TLDR: Long term outcomes ~50% seizure freedom rate with early experience. But we have learned much about how to perform the procedure & will likely see improved outcomes in years to come.
