“That’s what you were talking about, when you said I didn’t understand. Their attitude, the way they’d treat me.” “I’m sorry. I truly am. But that’s part of it, yes. Vampires even older than me will be there, ones who’ve lost any connection they might have had to the mortals they were born as.” They put one hand to their temple, and it was shaking badly. “You’re not like him. Or them.” “I try not to be. I can’t maintain this city’s peace well if I lose that entirely. But enough of that. Of me. Come.” He took their hand and led them away. Kathian followed him without complaint as he went down a side street, and into a doorway in an alley. It was the best he could do for privacy without going back home, and Kathian couldn’t wait, not even for a car to come get them. Not in their current state. Their heart raced in his ears and distress carved lines into their face. “Just breathe, Kathian.” He pulled them around to face him, and put his hands on their shoulders. “Put it out of your mind for a moment and breathe. Let your heartbeat slow and and calm flow into you.” They did as he instructed, their green eyes looking up into his. They’re close to my height, he thought distractedly. It would be so easy to… No, this was not the time for anything but making sure they were okay. That worrying look, like they were going to be sick, was almost entirely gone now. The trembling was subsiding. They were going to be fine. Well, perhaps not fine, but they were recovering from the encounter and that was what mattered. “Thank you for coming out with me tonight” He wasn’t aware he was going to say it until the words came out of his mouth.
