There is general agreement that a currency’s safe-haven status can be gauged by its response to changes in financial volatility. This column documents how, in the months following the Trump administration’s “Liberation Day” announcement, the dollar switched from rising during periods of market volatility to falling, and thus appeared to switch from a safe-haven to a ‘risk-on’ currency. Its reversion to traditional flight-to-safety behaviour in recent months may indicate that this ‘risk-on’ episode was a one-time event, but it is also possible that even as financial markets have calmed down, foreign entities are taking steps to reduce their dependence on the dollar for trade, payments, and investment.

We do this annual exercise of frustration because a single-payer system where physicians/hospitals submit bills to one place which is funded by a stable and predictable tax (especially compared to annual premium volatility) on people/businesses is deemed too close to socialism. God it sucks. 4/4

It shouldn't take an FOI request to see grant success rates. UKRI has a duty of care to researchers to supply this from the outset. We are judged, compared, promoted (or not) according to unbelievably bad odds.
After submitting a FOIA request UKRI, I obtained success rates by three grant call scheme and I can only say that I am disheartened by the results:

- ESRC New Investigator Grant 2025: 1%
- ESRC Research Grant Round 2025: 1%

At no point does this do anything to put the sector on ‘firmer financial footing’. The absurd volatility of free-for-all scrambling for students is still there, and the incentives to put even more resources towards gaming stupid metrics got even worse.
