I was honored to join the @UMich Alumnae Council for their annual Athena Award event. Lifting up students at the University of Michigan since 1917. We stand on the shoulders of these remarkable women, and we still have more work to do.

They unfurl quite the laundry list of grievances there - some seem unique (I had missed that UMich hired Pinkertons to surveil students, that’s Ivy levels of unhinged)

Half the #professors at #UMich can claim more of a #workingclass background than Platner (including me, and 2 fellow #FacultySenate reps (tenured profs) I got to know in a trip to UM Flint, both from upstate NY, like near Scranton, PA upstate, and families are farmers and non-college tradespeople)
See, you damn *elites* wouldn't understand what it's like for a country boy like Graham. He didn't have no "Exeter"--that boy had to scrape by with Hotchkiss. His daddy wasn't no CEO, just a lawyer, son of an iconic NYC modernist architect. Boy came up hard, nothing to sit on but Saarinan chairs...
wait, graham platner's "oyster farm" _only_ supplies his mother's restaurant and two other places?

in ann arbor tonight a group on campus at UMich was hosting two IOF soldiers at an event titled "Triggered: Combat on campus" and arrested 3 protestors against ... you know, casually platforming people who are arguably participating in an occupation and genocide.

Bureau of Justice keeps statistics. Go there and you can navigate to a spreadsheet hosted by UMich and you can add up the rows federal law enforcement officers, it's ~140K.

For those without #umich affiliation, the ETW is the student #satire newspaper, and I used to be a religious reader of it in college, though don't read it much as faculty now. But these articles are emblematic of how it's always on point.

I recently learned that 97% of #undergrads are vaccinated for #MMR (enough for #herdimmunity) and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Not sure how long it will stay that way, but I guess I dunno, being #vaccinated makes your kid healthy enough to do well enough in school to get into #UMich
TFW you are talking to pediatric residents and med students about clinical approaches in the era before pneumococcal, meningococcal, HIB vaccines (let alone MMR, varicella, hepatitis, polio, and DTaP vaccines) and they don’t think it’s just old guy story time… they look worried

Spent yesterday at UMich talking to law students and undergrads about what the economy looks like to them, what kind of lives they want to lead, and what barriers they see to creating that life. What I heard was both heartbreaking and hopeful. 1/

For example, UMich regularly enrolls a substantial amount of students from the NYC metro area (as much as 10% of their UG cohort, drawing from public & private schools). At UGA — which is approx. the same driving distance from the city — enrolls <1% of its UG enrollment from the NY/NJ/CT Tri-State.

When I started talking about the old deluder satan act of 1647 that established the purpose of public education in America and then started talking about how Charles Guiteau, Pres. Garfield’s assassin, was required to take remedial classes before entering UMich in the 1860s, it was time to call it 😅
Literally trying to put some final touches on this lit review draft to send it off for feedback and someone is not having it. Sir, I’m literally going to school to make more money - let me have 20 minutes 😭
