Evidence that at the least, RFK Jr has changed the conversation around food. At @apha.org meeting, “regulating ultra processed foods” appears to win the straw poll as the policy most likely to improve nutrition.

This right fucking here. I grew up on SNAP. Healthy food is always more expensive. Ultra processed stuff is cheap. Make it make sense.
Why do people buy pizza with EBT?
Because cauliflower is five dollars a head and you can buy five pizzas with the same money.
It’s not that folks don’t want to be healthy. They can’t afford to be healthy.

That's what the ultra processed food companies want you to think. There are a LOT of foods that take only minutes to make. We all have microwaves.

Buying the ultra processed food comes in large part from people's lives being so demanding that it is easier to throw a pizza in the oven than to cook a whole meal after a 16 hour day.

I don't 'resent the poor' for buying crap food. I would prefer that good food were purchased. IMO there's nothing wrong with restricting what can be bought. The only reason we don't do that is that big monocroppers and all the folks that make money from ultra processed foods want some of that $$$

People who use food stamps to buy another soft drink usually live in food deserts where ultra processed crap is about the only thing available to buy.

A popular theory about ultra-processed foods and dopamine just took a major hit
A neuroimaging study of young, healthy adults showed that consuming a milkshake did not, on average, result in a significant release of dopamine in the striatum region of the brain. While dopamine levels...

Is that interesting now? Maybe? With the MAHA bullshit and demonizing everything from "ultra processed foods" (which have no definition) and vaccines (which are good and walk the line of natural vs unnatural), we might be more interested in the distance from nature than ever.

Ultra-processed foods are often compared to addictive drugs. A new study examining the brain's response to a milkshake challenges this popular idea, revealing an unexpected pattern in the brain’s reward system.

Depression is linked to consuming refined and ultra-processed carbohydrates. Black currants support bone health. Manuka honey can help with cancer prevention. Flavonoid consumption from fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of dementia. Raspberries support heart health. getoiling.com/BarbDoyle

What are you saying with this? What is your implications? I assume that people don't need this drug and are just lazy which is why they are far?

The ultra processed foods spread like the cancers they cause. Flashy packaging and shelf lives that will outlive us all for cheaper than a piece of fruit.

Potentially. It was the reference to it 'soaring' that made me look further. The explanations posited look implausible at face value: ultra-processed foods were eaten widely pre-Covid too.
And references to are all over the Covid literature - here's one.

Low iron levels resulting from infection could be key trigger of long COVID
Problems with iron levels in the blood and the body’s ability to regulate this important nutrient as a result of SARS-CoV-2 infection could be a key trigger

If you have a problem with what people are buying on EBT (food stamps), your issue should be with corporations, not the person. Ultra-processed foods more often are cheaper & in larger quantities than healthy foods. People with limited money are making decisions based on how long they can be fed.
Why do people buy pizza with EBT?
Because cauliflower is five dollars a head and you can buy five pizzas with the same money.
It’s not that folks don’t want to be healthy. They can’t afford to be healthy.

The ultra processed factory food industry is subsidized and protected. I found many links and sources. Was looking for ones that seemed less obviously left or right. Change requires communities acting together to feed one another. Here is one from Time magazine. time.com/4393109/food...

Bad analogy. Try again. Like people don’t know how to cook. Or shop. Or are struggling and want the comfort that ultra-processed foods promise but never deliver.
