Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Not all turtles are tortoises, but all tortoises are turtles. One distinguishing feature of a tortoise is they are herbivores while their turtle brethren are omnivores.

Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Tytus is a Russian Tortoise, which are weed-eating* tortoises. Pictured: dandelion leaves & flowers, clover, echinacea, red leaf lettuce, & pansies. Variety is key to a healthy diet (as well as vitamins & calcium supplements.)

#TortoiseTuesday? Desert Tortoise, Gopherus agassizii. State reptile of California. Despite these peaceful herbivores living in areas humans mostly don’t want to be in, we have still managed to impact them negatively. Such a gift to see one out roaming. #herps #tortoise #deserttortoise #fieldwork

Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Tilly is working to develop strong muscles like her big bro, Tytus. To help her work those leg and neck muscles, I’m holding this plantain leaf above her head. In the wild, she’d pull leaves off of plants just like this.

For #TortoiseTuesday this is my pen & ink of a Leopard Tortoise on calligraphy paper. These tortoises range across various habitats in Africa. The shell was especially interesting to do. I have an ongoing series of drawings like these of various tortoises.
