"Simply a delicate kin of a snowdrop" was how Tolkien described niphredil, small white flowers featured in Middle-earth legendarium, in a 1969 letter to Amy Ronald. They are associated with important themes in his stories, like hope and triumph over challenges. 🧵1/6

In The Lay of Leithian, Tolkien described how Huan the Hound know the healing herbs to help the wounded Beren. This knowledge of healing herbs and roots was comparable to other canines: the dogs of Gula, the Mesopotamian goddess of medicine. 1/4

I always associate batik tambal, a batik motif from Yogyakarta, central region of Java, with Samwise Gamgee. The classic earthy colors and the patchwork motif represent down-to-earth wisdom, protection, and healing power under the humble face. 1/4

For #TolkienTrewsday (aka #TolkienTuesday), a video about Tolkien having a bit of a rant over a single kenning in Beowulf, that's probably been subtly mistranslated for years.

Urwen, Túrin's sister, was nicknamed Lalaith from a river, Nen Lalaith ("water of laughter"). When she died, Túrin couldn't say her name, for laughter had died with her. The connection between river, laughter, and grief later became prominent in Túrin's tale. 🧵1/3

Today’s piece (1/3) reflects on Tolkien’s constructions of childhood, esp. the Elves as perfect children, and what happens when they re-experience childhood after reincarnation.

For #TolkienTrewsday theme of Hobbit Day, I wrote a reflection. What do "Hobbitness" and home mean? Reading "The Hobbit" for the first time and recently made me realize that answering these means confronting history and memories.

What Does “Home” Mean? (Hobbit Day 2025 Post)
The comfort of home is the heart of ‘Hobbitness’, and creating one requires you to work, to learn, to remember, and to acknowledge. My personal reflection for Hobbit Day 2025.
