There’s so much pathos in this fragment. A warrior says goodbye to, I think, a parent. Because only this piece survives, we don’t see them, we just see the differing heights of their hands: the warrior grasping his spear, and the unseen figure resting their hand on a stick. Beautiful.

I'm an elder millennial and I read Anne Rice and Danielle Steel and the freaking BEAR by Marian Engel as a preteen. I smuggled books from my parents' and grandparents' collections. I borrowed thrillers out of lending libraries. This is not a TikTok phenomenon. Let your kids read. They'll be fine.
