#tachinid
It’s tachinid fly in S. California see my posts on this. I started dissecting. Even the so called, “Black Death” is tachinid fly. Monarch watch’s scientist Dr. Chip backed me up in my observations, said we need studies. Instead, everyone’s been sidetracked by unfounded milkweed hypothesis.

Different topic but I raised some 30,000 monarchs with Red Bull and Snapchat monarch gardens… I started collecting data and realized tachinid flies were parasitizing 80% of our monarchs.
Dr. Chip of Monarch Watch agreed with my observation for S. California on this, said that we need studies.

In S. California 80% are wiped out by tachinid flies who parasitize. The “OE” so many worry about is still 10% or less, and NOT a concern. Praying mantis will descale butterfly populations, so we relocate them to non butterfly gardens. Climate warming is the biggest threat to all pollinators, and us

🪰Winthemia "pinguis"? parasitic tachinid fly targeting Lepidoptera larvae. Native to North America, adults feature hairy eyes, short proboscis for honeydew feeding, and oval abdomens. If I have correctly identified the species, this is an invasive species in Brazil.

You muscid in quick as they’ll fly off the shelves. Don’t tachinid my word for it.

a spectacularly successful native! (for me anyway, not sure where you are)
It is, at least, extremely popular with the little wasps and tachinid flies and those sorts of folks

Not a tachinid! I'm a dummy! It's a goddamn muscid, Mesembrina sp. I was fooled by its ridiculously large calypters and tachinid style face and somehow didn't look at the postscutellum in all my fussing. Thanks @khong-a-tach.bsky.social

stumped by this tachinid. supposedly collected in Oregon but doesn't resemble any nearctic genus that I can suss out. hard to confidently key out in the MND because most of the important parts are encrusted with mites. seems like it should be in the Dexiini tribe based on the antennae

🙏 I’ll ask for LA Fire community in recovery support donations! 🌱 Dr. Chip is good people - friend of my mentor of 16 years (Randy Oliver). Dr. Chip confirmed my observation that a whopping 80%!! Of S. California monarchs are parasitized by tachinid fly… tropical milkweed is NOT the enemy!

Nice shot. Looks like Popillia japonica, Japanese beetle. Introduced to North America (and Europe, more recently) and considered a pest, such as of roses. Keep an eye out for small white eggs laid on its pronotum - that's a tachinid fly parasite introduced to control the beetle!

One of the worst parts of winter is not having a lot of daylight, this means I sometimes have to do my nature watching in my office. Last week I found this Western conifer seed bug with Tachinid fly eggs (likely from the genus Phasiinae). #insects 🌿🪰
