One of the hallmarks of Lovecraft's approach to weird fiction is that he avoided a lot of the trite standardization that marked 20th-century horror. This was the period where Universal Monsters helped define a pantheon of horror, and Cthulhu & co. were not in it.

Lovecraft's heirs were less innovative, the Mythos has experienced periodic efforts at standardization, familiar tropes emerged, a lot of stories have been written that rehash Lovecraftian horrors. Pastiche almost killed the subgenre, even before Cthulhu plushies emerged.

it's actually really similar to how people outside of north america think we have only 120V electrical services. We do not!

We have split-phase 240V power with mainly 120V branch circuits for low powered devices, and the reason for this is, you guessed it, early standardization.

But I've lived in the UK, those people are full of shit claiming they're doing standardization. They didn't even adopt decimalized currency until the 1970s, centuries after the US and much of the world. But also common, non-metric units exist all over the place.

To be clear, this isn’t a complaint about students or fellow teachers. It’s a complaint that testing regimes, policies of standardization, and stubbornly self-perpetuating discourses of schoolishness created conditions that made the AI in education crisis 1000x worse (from a teaching/learning POV).

Today is National Mammography Day

The day was designated to raise awareness about the importance of mammograms for early breast cancer detection. Its creation followed decades of advancements in mammography technology, particularly its standardization as a screening tool in the 1960's and 1970's.

Abstract. Is module-lattice reduction better than unstructured lattice reduction? This question was highlighted as ‘Q8’ in the Kyber NIST standardization submission (Avanzi et al., 2021), as potentially affecting the concrete security of Kyber and other module-lattice-based schemes. Foundational works on module-lattice reduction (Lee, Pellet-Mary, Stehlé, and Wallet, ASIACRYPT 2019; Mukherjee and Stephens-Davidowitz, CRYPTO 2020) confirmed the existence of such module variants of LLL and block-reduction algorithms, but focus only on provable worst-case asymptotic behavior. In this work, we present a concrete average-case analysis of module-lattice reduction. Specifically, we address the question of the expected slope after running module-BKZ, and pinpoint the discriminant Δ_(K) of the number field at hand as the main quantity driving this slope. We convert this back into a gain or loss on the blocksize β: module-BKZ in a number field K of degree d requires an SVP oracle of dimension β + log (|Δ_(K)|/d^(d))β/(dlog β) + o(β/log β) to reach the same slope as unstructured BKZ with blocksize β. This asymptotic summary hides further terms that we predict concretely using experimentally verified heuristics. Incidentally, we provide the first open-source implementation of module-BKZ for some cyclotomic fields. For power-of-two cyclotomic fields, we have |Δ_(K)| = d^(d), and conclude that module-BKZ requires a blocksize larger than its unstructured counterpart by d − 1 + o(1). On the contrary, for all other cyclotomic fields we have |Δ_(K)| < d^(d), so module-BKZ provides a sublinear Θ(β/log β) gain on the required blocksize, yielding a subexponential speedup of exp (Θ(β/log β)).
