Question: If President can fire PCLOB commissioners for any reason, does that compromise the independence of the board?
Williams: not for me to comment on President's personnel decisions. Note that statute does not have for cause protections. #SOTN2025

Travis: Part of deal is that PCLOB names people to review commission to certify privacy and a court of review. Getting resignations. Undermines entire data flow agreements. EU could prohibit data flows bcause perceived as Trump puppet. #SOTN2025

Travis: 2 b on PCLOB, must be nominated by President, confirmed by Senate, then Commissioned (actual piece of paper with WH seal on it). But then some random person could just fire through an email. #SOTN2025

#SOTN2025 questions from audience. "How can we make the EO on not pressuring websites to take own content permanent." This is great example of how things go from conspiracy, to Jim Jordan, to "substantiated."

Pearlmutter: We got 10K responses to inquiry. No, we did not use AI to analyze them.
Increase in Deep Fake because AI makes it cheap and easy. How do we deal with this? First report analyzed existing state law and found it insufficient. Pushed for Congress to create new law. #SOTN2025

Brian (cutting to the chase): So what was it like being fired by Trump?

Travis: Well, a lot of other people have now had that experience.
Actually thought it was a joke as email came from name he didn't recognize and included enough email addresses to look like spam.

Obernolte: Also support "incrementalism" because it is all so fast moving no legislation can capture it all.
(Me: we used to create and empower regulators to address this because they can be more expert and nimble.)

Travis: Very hard to stand up in meeting with WH counsel, Attorney General, and intelligence community and disagree/hold ground on matters of principle. Even harder if you are there alone w/no other Commissioners to support you.

My friend Alex is here at #SOTN2025 as well, sharing his reports in real-time. (He notes in the thread below that absence of speakers from the White House and its associated offices represents a distinct contrast from prior State of the Net conferences.)
At the annual State of the Net conference in DC, it feels like “Groundhog Day” for data protection as a Senator calls for an online privacy law.
