Thanks to organizers of Revelstoke’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation gathering. It provides a moment to listen, connect, learn, reflect and strengthen bonds. This year we commemorated the passing of Sinixt artist Ric Gendron, whose works are featured in Art Alleries on First Street West.
The walk travels past Sinixt artist Ric Gendron’s works in the Art Alleries exhibit off of First Street West. Gathering at Cascadia Credit Union before walking to Centennial Park. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation walk passes Revelstoke City Hall. Gathering in Centennial Park for drumming, speeches, food and catching up with community members.

The U.S.-based Sinixt Confederacy is suing the B.C. government for not consulting the tribe on land and education matters. The Sinixt say the government will only commit to notifying them of decisions relating to their traditional territory.

It is okay to just say Native American. You don't have to do that weird pause thing or say it as if you're using air quotes. If you are feeling a little unsure, it is okay to ask us what term is preferable or even what tribe specifically.

Land Acknowledgement Before Europeans colonized this land, it was used and cared for by the Indigenous peoples who called it home. What is colonially known as Revelstoke is located on the traditional territory of the Sinixt, Secwepeme, Ktunaxa and Syilx First Nations. We are uninvited guests on this land, and invite you to reflect on that fact as you enter this exhibit. The railway was a major vehicle for colonization. After the coming of the railway, everything changed. The railway's impact on Indigenous peoples has been far-reaching and still echoes today. These are themes the museum is working to explore more thoroughly through consultation with the local Indigenous population.
