In the late nineties, SFWA offered health insurance in cooperation with the National Writers Union, but the company went into decline and SFWA stopped participating. SFWA also offered health insurance for members in the eighties, but that also didn't last.

The only thing I have read about her that was bad was her siding with Stanisław Lem during his tantrum at the SFWA, but I have only read the Wikipedia summary of that. Maybe he had a good point, but it seems really stupid

Two years ago today, this little book that could launched into the world. I had no idea it would be nominated for several awards, becoming a Nebula and BSFA finalist also. The Inn at the Amethyst Lantern then led to a trilogy. The Secret of the Sapphire Sentinel is out this week.

It won't let me...can you try messaging me? Or...are you in the SFWA Discord? I don't want to post my email address publicly on social media, I get enough spam as it is.

This premise reminds of an entertaining book published in the early 80’s, War of Omission, by Kevin O’Donnell, Jr.
And TIL that there is an award named after him, the Kevin O’Donnell, Jr. Service to SFWA Award!
He was one of my favourite authors in the 70’s and 80’s.

“We Can Remember It For You Retail” is the story that originally got me into SFWA. I was really amazed that I was able to get most of its plot and twists to fit in a song, because it’s a complex little story. So, I’m really happy with how this turned out:

I could have sworn SFWA had an insurance offering years ago. Maybe it was challenged and ruled unlawful?

Because of their work there is now precedent in CA for unions of independent contractors. I would love nothing more than for SFWA to build on that. I would help! Especially in this time where the laws mean fuck-all to those running the country, it’s time to build support networks of our own.

It is very frustrating, but SFWA looked into this and it is literally illegal in the United States. Because fiction writers are independent contractors, they cannot form a union and an organization cannot provide health insurance to its members in this manner.

SFWA actually did this again just pre covid, but it fell apart after about a year I think, I’m unclear why.

I remember someone telling me that until I made 99K from my various writing & works, an LLC would cost me too much in upkeep. But maybe not true anymore?
SFWA did try to find something for us. I remember in the early 80s or so, an attempt. But a lot of members had insurance through a spouse, so....

It doesn’t like my local one does this, which is a bummer because WA state health insurance is so regulated I couldn’t get healthcare via SFWA, and this would have been a cool option. But maybe it will work for some of you!
If you're a writer/other creator in the United States, consider creating an LLC for your business and then signing up for a local area Chamber of Commerce. Many of them have health insurance plans that pool their members and members of other CoCs to create insurance efficiencies relative to ACA.

WELL IN FACT if you are a member of @sfwa.bsky.social, they have some health insurance options available, based on the same concept of pooling groups together (in this case other lit-focused orgs). This itself is a compelling reason for qualified writers to join SFWA.
