ITNR I’d argue is their most complete album since SFTD - and it is their most overt as far as themes go. Negative space is, imho, their best in a while. I’m seeing them for the 14th time in October lol

I really want to read the shadow series at some point. One of my best friends in HS loved it but I went down the Speaker for the Dead sequel series instead. SFTD was foundational for me. Xenocide and Children of the Mind were not... Issues with Card being a horrible awful person acknowledged.

Speaker for the Dead is my greatest tragedy as a bookseller: Ender’s is great, but SFTD refined the concept & expanded it; hugely anti-war… nowadays, I will hand a customer a used copy if we have it, or not recommend at all.
My advice: buy those books used—take your inspirations w/o handing him $$$

the best endorsement i can give SftD is that i have the kind of ADHD that *constantly* seeks out new systems to read and run, and yet it's gotten three full campaigns out of me now!!

but I can barely find any mention of the ways religion is used as a stand-in for having humanity and empathy.
Ender's Game posits the importance of empathy for our enemies and the harm and evil that comes from Othering a group of people you don't understand, a theme that's carried on in SFTD.

Really enjoyed the piece. I want to suggest one thing: Lullabies to Paralyze is the second half of the double album that begins with SFTD. It's widely underrated by fans of the band because it follows a masterpiece, but I think Lullabies is almost as good.

The scifi logic becomes *super* hard to get through later in the SFTD series: by the end it just felt like the whole damn thing was a constant deus ex machina, because it was so absurdly inconsistent. "hi, I have universe-bending magic powers but can be defeated by an overblown light switch"
