I'm reading a book on writing screenplays and it's really emphasising the need to start with action if you want to sell it in the 2020s, and while I don't disagree with that, boy it makes me a bit 'hrrmm' when a major driving force of that convention is streaming and lack of audience attention

I’m in a unique position, using a complete script as the outline for a book. You might say that’s pretty structured. But I’ve done this before, written screenplays first. A lot of my own work was first written as a screenplay. I don’t think that’s common. #WeeknightWriters

I'm closest to a Neutral Plotter, although that applies more to longer works (novels, plays, screenplays). If it's a short story, I write pretty quickly and can write the story in the time it would take me to outline it, so I'm a Lawful Pantser.

Movie #145: After the Hunt

I'm starting to think that Luca Guadagnino is a bad director. If nothing else, the screenplays he picks up are super messy. This film is a character study about characters that we never learn that much about. What we do learn about them makes them kinda unlikable.

Any request of this nature is inherently a request for partnership. Any allowance of this nature implies the r/screenwriting's endorsement. Any "informational posting" about a paid service that asks for $50-$500 "refundable" for a pitch session with a producer is a massive violation of our rules.

Hope you are well. Just wanted to drop you a quick line in light of the news about the Nicholl now being administered by The Black List. I’m developing a new platform for screenwriters that seeks to increase industry access and create a new system to make the screenplay-to-film pipeline more efficient and streamlined. This seems like an appropriate time to at least tell screenwriters that our new platform is in the works, and that basically, help is on the way. I do not want to post something that is promotional in nature, just a simple FYI so writers can prepare their material, etc. for our upcoming launch this summer— and perhaps give them a bit of hope that things will get better. Of course I would not post such a thing without your prior approval. If you’re curious what I’m working on you can check out Pitcheroo.com. We have a mailing list set up.

So I have several concerns here. One of them is provable value. The issue with private initiatives like this is that when they're launched on the buy-in of the community, they're using the community to provide their value rather than having provable value from the outset.

One of the other issues - what exactly do you have to offer that's above and beyond your own personal experience and achievements? Do you have a network of gatekeepers whose participation means genuine advancement for users? Are they going to see progress along the production track? How can you demonstrate that?

Another - what exactly are you offering that's above and beyond what already happens in the subreddit? It's true that the subreddit is highly initiative based and can be difficult for new people to navigate, but given the nature of what we do here, there's actually not a lot of incentive to hand-hold every person who comes here. What we offer is equality of opportunity, but not outcomes.

In any case this is really something that needs to show results before we can let you offer it to the subreddit. It's not personal, it's just that we have blanket policies that restrict self promotion and services/outside platforms from users because there have been a dozen propositions like this than have been put to us. Some of them we've blocked entirely from posting here because they're either highly suspect (kinolime) or just some QF offering a "screenwriting bootcamp" for absurdly high sums of money. We're not even that thrilled about allowing engagement from pro writers who offer paid classes, and we ask them not to promote.

Further, and on a personal level, I honestly do not see the value in pitches. It's a format that only benefits a very small number of people who may or may not be able to actually write well. There are folks who can pitch all day long but can't write their way out of a paper bag, and other people who can't pitch to save their lives but are dynamite on the page. This potential…

So a couple of things:

you'd need to demonstrate value to us prior to being able to promote your platform here.

you'd have to show how you're different, and show some results. That means, at the bare minimum improvement on screenplays, not on the lowest effort form of advertising potential. I'm not loving the name of your platform for the above reasons.

If you want to go forward with testing a beta, this is my recommendation - reach out directly to a group of users and privately invite them. You have permission to do that, and you can invoke that in any message to them. Try for a broad experience range. But at this point it's not great for the community or for you to go public on the subreddit with this.

Hopefully that all makes sense.

No worries at all—your concerns are absolutely valid. I just want to add (and it’s already on our site), we’re also launching a nonprofit .org alongside the main Pitcheroo platform. It’s a free educational resource built to offer training, mentorship, and annual grant funding to disadvantaged screenwriters, all funded by the main platform.

The goal is exactly what you described: to lift up screenwriters and give them the tools they need to succeed—so when they come to Pitcheroo.com, they’re ready to put their best foot forward.

We’re building our producer network with real, credited professionals—the kind whose work users would recognize. It’ll take time, of course, to generate long-term production results through the platform, but those relationships are the foundation.

I’m happy to jump on a Zoom anytime if you’d like to hear more. I totally understand not allowing promotion at this stage, but I’ve been transparent on socials and now have about 500 writers signed up for the beta in June. I’ll make sure to keep it private here, but I hope it’s okay if I keep you posted as things progress.
