*Aiskō(ja)n and its descendants are related to Russian иска́ть (iskátʹ, “to seek”), Lithuanian ‘ieškóti’ (“to seek; to search”), and Sanskrit इ॒च्छति॑ (iccháti, “to desire; to seek”).

that one was apparently a transliteration of a Sanskrit word misinterpreted as a similar (and ~identically written) Arabic word that meant "fold", and then translated with the Latin word for "fold" which was "sinus"

Ixora: the name derives from Ishvara, a Hindu divinity, from the Sanskrit īśvara, meaning "ruler, lord."

A tropical plant, it also grows in Florida, and is widely known as West Indian jasmine. - Wikipedia.

it's interesting that Ancient Egyptian (Coptic ⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓ /woy/ < <wy> */way/) and Proto-Indo-European (*wáy) have the exact same "woe!" interjection.

this seems like either a wanderwort or one of those para-linguistic utterances that keep reinventing themselves (papa, mama, caca)

(Sanskrit: rakṣ).

Though it also has Arabic/Persian meaning of dancing (Arabic/Persian: raqs)... but Astra isn't a dancer! Nor the fanbase or this robot!

i'm about to give up on hoping the general public realizing our political parties both serve capitalism and what 'the people' want is as relevant to politicians as the contents of Sanskrit tablets

What’s happening now is meant to imprint your memory. It’s supposed to serve as a permanent warning to you & your kin. Science calls it epigenetics. Spirit calls it inevitable. Bhavitavyatā Is its name in Sanskrit.

Not fate, but consequence.

When will we ever learn❔

Happy new year from Milo and his team 🐾

Friendliness (‘maitri’ in Sanskrit) is the 1st of the ‘Brahmaviharas’ - the antidotes to the suffering (‘dukha’) of life

Let’s look after ourselves and each other in 2026. Kindness overflows from a full cup 🦋

I spent a lot of time learning Devanagari script (what Sanskrit uses) but it was incredibly difficult because of aphantasia. Now I can only "imagine" a couple of characters because of muscle memory writing them...

Persian hasn't retained case (rɑ is a clitic). I don't know offhand if what's left of Hindi case is inherited, but if so, it's a pale shadow indeed of what you see in Sanskrit or the average Balto-Slavic language.

Apparently oranges were imported from Asia with a Sanskrit name, and the use of the word “orange” to refer to the color instead of the fruit comes a century or two later.

The Etymology of the "Orange"
Why did we give our favorite citrus a name that rhymes with almost nothing? A look at the fruit's juicy linguistic origins

Oh, how charmingly rustic -- do you peasants not pronounce the first "n" in "norange?" How delightful, hoo hoo hoo. Let me try, let me try... 'orange! Ha ha, now I did it too!

All three of those are just names that mean things in either Japanese or Sanskrit. Pun names are for less important or comedy characters, it's why he's named Manfred Von Karma instead of Heywood Jashootme.

Like in English there's just "man" (singular) and "men" (plural)

But in Sanskrit there's "नरः" (singular), "नरौ" (dual) and "नराः" (plural). You always have to use a different ending when there's exactly two.

That moment when you thought you downlaoded a rare and obscure manga succesfully to find out that its in a different language is a drag but hey now I have Angel Dentetsu in what I can only presume could be a Sanskrit based language. Not to find it in Englysh.
