there's actually nothing in FAR part 103 preventing you from making a self-launched sailplane that takes off using JATO bottles

@mattblaze

Global Hawk are impressive. They carry VHF and UHF airband radios and civilian compatible transponders/ADS-B (and IFF) and can relay VHF/UHF comms to/from the remote pilot/operator.

IIRC there was a concern about a missing sailplane in remote areas of UT/NV and thanks to folks being […]

This guy!

“Mr. Meyer once built an amphibious seaplane from a kit. And it took him five years, but he also built a sailplane — from scratch in his basement, using plans he bought.”

"Hope is not a strategy."

That message is taped to the instrument panel of the famous Concordia glider/sailplane, piloted by Dick Butler.

It's Sunday with Afterburner Archives

On this #Sunday with Afterburner Archives we journey back to one of the most-produced #gliders in the world — the Grünau Baby IIb. With its simple yet graceful design, this single-seat #sailplane helped generations to learn the art of #soaring.

After over a month away, it was nice to get back aloft today and go solo on the winch again. A dark and low visibility Autumn day over York, with next to no wind, but managed to get to a respectable 1,500ft. Nice reminder of how gently the Ka13 flies.

Sailplane Grand Prix (back in late August), final day.

Launching out of St Auban into a north wind...as soon as you get airborne your glider is on aerotow...low over the village.

If the towplane loses power, or you have to release from the tow rope...you have no good options.

I've been there […]

But on the flip side, if you *have* the money to enjoy things without putting your finances at risk, enjoy things. Take the sailplane ride. Go to the place you always wanted to go. Hang out with the people who invited you to the event that sounded cool. Skydive.

Some Monday Magic courtesy of Bob Carlton in his FoxJet Sailplane at Abbotsford International Air Show 2024. This image represents about 3 minutes of Bob's night time pyrotechnic display. Can you follow the gliders outline in the sky?

case in point -- met a friend yesterday whose sailplane canopy came off at 3.000 feet, amazingly he found the phone (intact!!) two days later, but GoPro (which could help reconstruct what went wrong) still missing.

Gemini did a plausible calculation where GoPro could be. Out of this world good.

The Foxjet glider, flown by Bob Carlton, put on an incredible aerobatic display at the Great Colorado Air Show this weekend.

Have you ever watched a sailplane perform aerobatics live?

✈️ Goldberg built his first working plane at 15. Worked at Comet, then Top Flite. In 1955 he struck out on his own, focusing on designs that flew well and were affordable.

🪶 Featured Kit: K-26 2×4 Sailplane
A rare 4-ft wingspan, 2-channel balsa glider from House of Balsa. Loved the precision of its build & simplicity—classic RC nostalgia.
