#riscix
@philpem I got the source in around 1999 after it was ported to #freebsd and I got it working on #netbsd. I don't think it came via RISCiX, I think the chronologies wouldn't work

This is a UNIX textbook, I know this!

@sborrill @stefano People did run RISCiX with less. Acorn lent me an R140 before I got the R260, and that had substantially less (don't remember exactly how much now). But although it did run, you couldn't really do useful work on it, certainly not at the scale of the artificial intelligence […]

@simon_brooke @stefano bearing in mind that the A540/R260 topped out at 16MB and the 4MB upgrades were hard to come by, I think many people ran RISCiX with less. X11 just about works on a 4MB A440/1 machine albeit with a little swapping...

Yeah, that’s not going to be loading RiscIX any time soon ☠️ This is the Rodime drive from my Acorn R140.

MFM interface too, I don’t know of a project that emulates those aside from David Gesswein’s excellent board which I have, but it’s 5.25” sized.

Success with the Acorn A3000 and seeing an R140 working yesterday at the museum made me try powering mine up. Yesterday I tested the PSU and today tested the power rails.

Honking great tantrum on the 12v rail was shorted so I swapped it for a less explodey one and…

…it worked!

For 5 mins.

- Tube co-pro bugs
- Project A, the ARM CPU
- How to test a chip that doesn’t exist yet!
- Many emulators
- First ARM silicon
- Shifting issues
- Plus FPU, RISCiX, and time wasted on ARX
At next Monday's (16th June) ROUGOL meeting Hugo Tyson will be joining us in the pub to talk about everything(ish) he did at Acorn rougol.jellybaby.net/meetings/ind...

Quite. But the POSIX nature of the OS is more hidden there.

Incidentally, I was running RISCiX (BSD UNIX) on an Acorn R140 (A440 with a bigger hard disc) with an ARM2 processor at a university...

Today's project is/was to get the extremely rare #acorn A680 working. Given its rarity and how I seem to be the only one with a working install of #riscix (which is a #bsd from the late 80s), I used the #riscpc with #netbsd to make a copy of the disk […]

Sorry, month late to this, but have to add RISCiX on ARM
