Every other country in the world teaches English as a second language and another language is mandatory. Only in xenophobic racist America do we not teach a second language as mandatory education. The world has polyglots & we have polyrots. Absolutely shameful.

opposite, they think it's the height of american arrogance to assume that people in other countries aren't all polyglots fluent in at least two languages, probably three. "not everyone else is as lazy as you people" was thrown around the thread at one point lol

they probably meant that the two languages have significant overlap in terms of semantics, and many programs will be valid for both.
ofc, saying that two languages intersect doesn't mean much when polyglots exist.

Nothing like polyglots who are communicating effectively (if imperfectly) in a second or third language being mocked by monoglots who can barely fumblefuck their way through their first and only language.

I love that Dr. Leyre Alejaldre Biel's students at Columbia University also produced a podcast for their Spanish class.
Content-based teaching and project-based learning is where it's at.

American kids should graduate high school conversational in Spanish and *least* one other language just for the sake of understanding and relating to that many more people. If we were a country that cared about the future Americans would have a reputation as polyglots not monolingual rubes.

I looked at what actors and opera singers do to perform texts in languages they might not necessarily speak. (The opera singers all say learn the languages.)
I imagine improv has good ideas to help people take risks and be less self-conscious.

I love talking to my friends from across the world. They tend to say and explain things better about their own countries than anything I've heard from a native english speaking american.

As a developer I do miss using capable and performant runtimes so I can focus on correctness instead. There are so many excuses made by monoglot/monoruntime developers that promote busy, error-prone work that doesn't aid the software product at all.
That is all I am going to say. I miss polyglots.
