Dear Future Ones oulder Jacqueline Woodson Dear Future Ones who do not understand an old woman puzzling over January crocuses and the delicate shoots of tulips poking through winter leaves Winter leaves us questioning the absence of snow. A headshake, a sigh, a mind turning inside the past: Twenty years on this planet and my daughter can count snowstorms lived through on a single hand. Oh Dear Future Ones, I apologize for decades of Styrofoam lunches eaten happily because the world would always be the way I knew it as a child. I apologize from tin cans thrown into trashcans. For the many years I loved helium-filled mylar balloons. I apologize for the time I bought an expensive deodorant, desired because I could spray it instead ofFrolling it on. I apologize for the magical thinking that led me to believe this world as I knew it would always be here and bred you into with my mind on other freedoms cuz how many dreams of freedom can a single body hold now old, you see me back bent and frowning grateful for iceless sidewalks all winter long and terrified. Oh Dear Future Ones. You do not know a world that isn't already burning, a time when flowers bloomed in seasons we understood (Because once there were seasons here in New York). Once snow barricaded me into my childhood home. Brooklyn. Blizzard of 78. We waited, my siblings and I, gleefully imagining a June thaw the four of us skeletons heartbreakingly remembered. We're history, we said. As though we already knew what was coming. As though, Future Ones, we already saw you out there reading about us and remembering snow.

The Death of Santa Claus by Charles Harper Webb He's had the chest pains for weeks, but doctors don't make house calls to the North Pole, he's let his Blue Cross lapse, blood tests make him faint, hospital gown always flap open, waiting rooms upset his stomach, and it's only indigestion anyway, he thinks, until, feeding the reindeer, he feels as if a monster fist has grabbed his heart and won't stop squeezing. He can't breathe, and the beautiful white world he loves goes black, and he drops on his jelly belly in the snow and Mrs. Claus tears out of the toy factory wailing, and the elves wring their little hands, and Rudolph's nose blinks like a sad ambulance light, and in a tract house in Houston, Texas, I'm 8, telling my mom that stupid kids at school say Santa's a big fake, and she sits with me on our purple-flowered couch, and takes my hand, tears in her throat, the terrible news rising in her eyes.

That Was Her Way of Showing God We didn't go to church on Sundays, but my mother cleaned the whole house. Wiped from behind the toilet to inside of the oven. That was her way of honoring God. Separating cloth by color, making sure nothing bled, onto anything else, stretching pork across seven days, because even poverty knows ritual. Baptizing Black babies in bathtubs of hand-me-down water, one, after another. A poor woman's tradition, but of its own abundance. That was her way of showing God that she had a servant's heart, that she was a good woman, with all of the little she had.

I Am Offering this Poem BY JIMMY SANTIAGO BACA I am offering this poem to you, since I have nothing else to give. Keep it like a warm coat when winter comes to cover you, or like a pair of thick socks the cold cannot bite through, I love you, I have nothing else to give you, so it is a pot full of yellow corn to warm your belly in winter, it is a scarf for your head, to wear over your hair, to tie up around your face, I love you, Keep it, treasure this as you would if you were lost, needing direction, in the wilderness life becomes when mature; and in the corner of your drawer, tucked away like a cabin or hogan in dense trees, come knocking, and I will answer, give you directions, and let you warm yourself by this fire, rest by this fire, and make you feel safe I love you, It’s all I have to give, and all anyone needs to live, and to go on living inside, when the world outside no longer cares if you live or die; remember, I love you. Fuck Your Lecture on Craft, My People Are Dying BY NOOR HINDI Colonizers write about flowers. I tell you about children throwing rocks at Israeli tanks seconds before becoming daisies. I want to be like those poets who care about the moon. Palestinians don't see the moon from jail cells and prisons. It's so beautiful, the moon. They're so beautiful, the flowers. I pick flowers for my dead father when I'm sad. He watches Al Jazeera all day. I wish Jessica would stop texting me Happy Ramadan. I know I'm American because when I walk into a room something dies. Metaphors about death are for poets who think ghosts care about sound. When I die, I promise to haunt you forever. One day, I'll write about the flowers like we own them.

So many hours between the day receding and what we recognize as morning, the sun cresting like a wave that won’t break over us—as if  light were protective, as if  no hearts were flayed, no bodies broken on a day like today. In any film, the sunrise tells us everything will be all right. Danger wouldn’t dare show up now, dragging its shadow across the screen. We talk so much of  light, please let me speak on behalf of  the good dark. Let us talk more of how dark the beginning of a day is.

My students are studying one of 5 texts, so to model their assignments, I’m studying Clint Smith’s “Above Ground.” This one made me feel big things, as a daughter, wife of over a decade, and teacher of English.
Punctuation I went to the store filled with water. I went to the store, filled with water. The store is submerged or I am crying in the aisles There is something in your eyes I can't get out. There is something in your eyes; I can't get out. I am trying to help I am trying to run away I am scared you don't really know me. I am scared; you don't really know me. I am expressing concern about where we're going I am making a declaration of where we are The wind carried my mother's voice away after the storm came. The wind carried my mother's voice away; after, the storm came. My mother is grieving all that she lost or I am grieving the loss of my mother There are new flowers on the trees I climbed every day as a child. There are new flowers on the trees; I climbed every day as a child. I am relishing the cycle of renewal or I am lamenting that something has taken my place It's hard for me to say I am not always the man I want to be. Its hard for me to say; I am not always the man I want to be. I am trying to be honest with myself or I am trying to be honest with you.
